Mottram Hall

Mottram Hall | NCG Top 100s: GB&I Golf Resorts

Having undergone renovations costing more than £5 million in 2013, and then a sale to hotel group Champneys five years later, Mottram Hall has gone through plenty of changes in the last decade or so. The renovated hotel is joined by a championship golf course and amazing practice facilities, and a stunning choice of accommodation within the Grade-II listed building.

The course, designed by world-renowned golf course architect Dave Thomas, is of championship standard, having played host to the PGA EuroPro Tour and the European Seniors PGA Championship. The Par 72 runs at just over 7,000 yards and has two distinct sections – the open front nine, and the narrow, tree-lined back nine. There is also a newly refurbished driving range among the high-class practice facilities at Mottram Hall.

The Grade-II listed building at Mottram Hall, which dates to the 18th Century, is the home to the accommodation offerings, eateries, and plenty more. In terms of rooms, there is a wide choice for guests to select from. Standard Rooms come in three forms depending on what size bed you choose, while there are Classic Rooms, Feature Double and Superior Double Rooms as well. The Bridal Suite is the best of the best, while there are also Junior Suites and Suites.

The Georgian building also houses three restaurants – Raffaella's, Barney’s and the Carrington Grill. There is also plenty of space for those that want to get married, while the health club and spa provide a suitable spot for those that fancy working out, or those that just want to relax in the swimming pool, hydropool, sauna or steam room. There are treatment rooms as well for those that want to relax even further with a massage or facial treatment.

Mottram Hall Overview | NCG Top 100s: GB&I Golf Resorts

The Championship Course

Mottram Hall only has one golf course, but it is a championship level layout designed by world-renowned golf course architect Dave Thomas. A sniff over 7,000 yards, the Par 72 track has played host to the European Seniors PGA Championship among a range of other tournaments, including the PGA EuroPro Tour as well.

The front nine plays with the backdrop of the 18th Century hall, all to the northwest of the hall. The first is a 500-yard par 5, while the 3rd is the shortest hole on the property. From the tips, it plays 175 yards, but there is water in front of the green. The other par 3 on the front side is more than 210 yards long. The 9th brings golfers back to the front of Mottram Hall and is the first of back-to-back par 5s.

The second half of the course makes its way through the woodlands, starting with the 10th which is a double dog-leg right and a true three-shotter. The final three holes at Mottram Hall are a wonderful, but tough finish. 16 is a 225-yard par 3, the longest of the short holes on the course, while the penultimate hole is a dog-leg right par 4 with a stream running across the fairway around 80 yards from the green. The final hole on the course is a long par 5, with six bunkers guarding the hole along the way.

The Champneys Hotel at Mottram Hall is housed within the Grade-II listed building at the centre of the resort. There are nine different types of rooms and suites in the hotel, providing something for all parties that take the trip to the northwest of England.

There are also Classic Rooms, Superior Double and Feature Double Rooms, with the latter retaining the oak panelling from the original Georgian property on site.

Suites and Junior Suites are joined by the Bridal Suite, which is at the top of the tree at Mottram Hall, providing the perfect place for newlyweds to spend their first night as a married couple. Mottram Hall is an award-winning wedding venue, another string to the bow of the resort.

The Carrington Grill is the AA rosette-holding restaurant at Mottram Hall, with seasonal dishes, English cuisine, and European twists. Raffaella’s is the resort newest eatery, while Barney’s is the spot for a quick bite to eat. Afternoon tea and Sunday lunch are both on the menu at Mottram Hall as well.
