The Dorset Golf Resort

The Dorset Golf Resort | NCG Top 100s: GB&I Golf Resorts

With 27 golf holes, extensive practice facilities, and a well-equipped fitness centre on site, you might be forgiven for thinking that the Dorset Golf Resort was your standard golfing venue. However, the range of Log Homes that you would normally only find in Scandinavia makes the Dorset that little bit special!

The golf course is a 27-hole masterpiece by Martin Hawtree, a man famous around the world for his golf course designs. The course is split into three loops – the Lakeland, Parkland and Woodland loops. The Woodland nine is one of the most picturesque golfing landscapes you could dream of during the summer, with the pink rhododendron forest in full bloom. There are also extensive practice facilities including a driving range and short game area to warm up on prior to the round.

Golf isn't the only activity to take part in during your stay, either. There are walking and jogging trails around the resort, while the venue also has its own private fishing lakes. Indoors, there is a fully equipped fitness centre and three indoor bowls mats, with both long and short mats available. Changing rooms, saunas and tropical showers are perfect following a workout.

Accommodation-wise, the Dorset Golf Resort is certainly one of a kind on our list. The Scandinavian Log Homes are beautiful and sit amongst the trees. The twelve properties come in either two- or three-bedroom form, and each has its own private sauna. There are also the Woodland and Oakland Cottages which can sleep up to ten people, while the hotel has a range of rooms to suit all guests.

The Dorset Golf Resort Overview | NCG Top 100s: GB&I Golf Resorts

Three Stunning 9-Hole Loops

The Dorset Golf Resort is home to a glorious 27-hole golf course, with three diverse loops of nine. All designed by Martin Hawtree, who has had a hand in recent changes and developments at Royal Birkdale, Lahinch, Trump Turnberry and Portmarnock.

Hawtree’s designs are renowned the world over for his tricky bunker placings and large, undulating greens. That’s exactly what is on show at the Dorset Golf Resort. The three loops – the Lakeland, Parkland and Woodland loops – are all different, with the latter running through a rhododendron forest.

During the summer months, the Woodland loop is one of the most picturesque golf courses you will find anywhere in the world. The pinks and purples on show from the rhododendron forest may well distract you somewhat from the task in hand. The Woodland loop is the shortest of the three, measuring just over 2,500 yards. The Par 33 layout features six par 4s and three par 3s, with the shortest hole coming at the 6th – just 141 yards from the tips – to a green surrounded by flowers.

The Lakeland/Parkland 18-hole course is the championship offering at The Dorset Golf Resort and can run further than 7,000 yards from the back tees. However, there are four teeing options to make sure that a round on the course is enjoyable for golfers of all abilities. The 6th measures more than 600 yards from the tips, while water comes into play on several holes throughout a round, most noticeably on the long par 4 12th hole.

Rooms, Cabins, and Cottages

The accommodation on offer at The Dorset Golf Resort is nothing like anything you will find at any other venue on the NCG Top 100s: GB&I Golf Resorts list. Yes, there is a hotel with rooms and suites, and there’s also some cottages. However, the Dorset Golf Resort is also home to several Log Homes as well.

There is a sublime variety of Scandinavian Log Homes on site at the Dorset Golf Resort. They come in either two- or three-bedroom form, and each property has its own private sauna for guests to relax in. The twelve properties have their own little campus on the resort, at the northwest side of the venue.

The Woodland and Oakland are the two cottages on site at the Dorset Golf Resort. The Woodland Cottage is a four-bedroom property that has a private patio and barbecue area overlooking the final hole of the Woodland Course. Meanwhile, the Oakland Cottage is the newest piece in the accommodation puzzle and is in the Resort Village. For those wanting a traditional resort stay, the Dorset Golf Resort does have a hotel, with a variety of rooms available.

Leisure & Activities

Away from the golf course, there is plenty to do during your stay at The Dorset Golf Resort. For those who enjoy the outdoors, there are trails for walking and jogging around the resort, while there are also private fishing lakes at the venue for guests to sit and relax by taking in the scenery, and hopefully a few catches!

Indoors, there is the opportunity to bowl. A three-rink bowling area was added to the resort in 2009, with both long mat and short mat indoor bowls available. There is also a fitness centre for those that want to work out. The gym is equipped with cardio and resistance machines, along with free weights, while there is also a sauna and tropical shower to enjoy post workout.
