Slieve Russell Overview | NCG Top 100s: GB&I Golf Resorts

18-Hole Championship Layout

Paddy Merrigan was the man behind the 18-hole championship course at Slieve Russell, using the Cavan landscape to create the course, which features plenty of water thanks to Lough Rud and Aghahover Lough, along with undulating terrain and strong greens. The Par 72 layout runs at more than 7,000 yards, with Merrigan’s design having enough to trick golfers of all abilities.

Those water hazards first come into play on the 2nd hole - ‘Aghahover Leap’. The hole plays around Aghahover Lough, and it is the hardest hole on the scorecard. The water also dissects the fairway, making it a tough driving hole. The 6th is the first of four par 5s on the property, and the easiest hole on the scorecard. Anything more than a par here really does feel like you’ve lost ground to your competitors (or friends)! The 9th brings you back to the clubhouse, allowing you to play Slieve Russell as both 9 and 18-hole challenges.

11 is where the water features once more. The par 3 is 189 yards from the back tees, and that is pretty much all carry to the green, with the water that runs between Lough Rud and Aghahover Lough in play. Lough Rud is then down the left side of both the 12th and 13th, while the par 3 16th is also played over water and is the signature hole on the course. The closing hole at Slieve Russell is a long par 5 that provides one final birdie opportunity as your round comes to a close.
