Aroeira | NCG Top 100s: European Golf Resorts

A mile from the beach, and less than half an hour from Portugal’s capital city, Aroeira is arguably in the perfect place for a golfing resort, with everything you could wish for on the doorstep almost.

The resort is situated less than 20 miles to the south of Lisbon, with the city of Setubal also within a half hour drive to the south east. Not only that, but the likes of Penha Longa, Oitavos Dunes, Troia Golf and Quinta da Marinha - all resorts on the NCG Top 100 European Golf Resorts list, are within an hour of Aroeira.

Two stunning golf courses are at Aroeira - the Pines Classic and the Challenge (formerly Aroeira I and Aroeira II). Frank Pennick was the man to design the Pines Classic, which opened in 1973. Pennick brought a touch of the English heathland to the Portuguese coastline with his design of the Pines Classic. Donald Steel added the Challenge Course to Aroeira’s portfolio in 2000.

The two golf courses both provide their own challenges, with the Pines Classic having hosted the Portuguese Open twice in the 1990s. After opening in 2000, the Challenge Course has since hosted Ladies European Tour Qualifying School and the Portuguese Ladies Open on several occasions. The resort also plays host to a stunning Golf Academy, which provides lessons and tuition for both adults and children, with the Junior Academy focussing on the kids.

The Aroeira Lisbon Hotel is a stunning place to stay during your time on the Portuguese coast. Guests can stay in a number of different rooms, with views of the gardens, golf courses or the pools. There is a wellness centre as well to help unwind and relax, while there is also the opportunity to take the trip to the Atlantic coast to partake in watersports.

Aroeira Overview | NCG Top 100s: European Golf Resorts

Two Stunning 18-Hole Courses

Aroeira is the home to two glorious 18-hole courses - the Pines Classic and the Challenge. The Pines Classic was designed by Frank Pennick and opened in 1973, while the Challenge came in to complement its older brother in 2000, with a Donald Steel design.

Aroeira Pines Classic
When the Pines Classic was opened at Aroeira back in 1973, the UK press affectionately christened the course as the ‘Wentworth of Lisbon’, with Frank Pennick’s design adding that English heathland touch to the region.

The course winds its way through tall pine forests, and plays at 6,650 yards, meaning that it is not the longest course. However, the design of the Pines Classic means that accuracy from the tee is required more than power.

The Portuguese Open was held on the Pines Classic in both 1996 and 1997, with Wayne Riley and Michael Jonzon being the men to win the DP World Tour event at Aroeira. The course has also played host to the Ladies European Tour and the European Men’s Club Trophy in its decorated history.

Aroeira Challenge
Aroeira Challenge (formerly known as Aroeira II) was designed by the world-renowned golf course architect Donald Steel. The course opened in 2000, but only after Steel had made sure to comply with DP World Tour recommendations so that the course could hold tournaments in its future.

The course features plenty of water hazards, with five lakes bordering the course at different times during the round. The Challenge Course at Aroeira has gone on to play host to the Portuguese Ladies Open on several occasions, as well as Qualifying School for the Ladies European Tour.

Aroeira Golf Academy

The Aroeira Golf Academy was only launched in 2015, but it has already become a key part of the resort. Expert tuition and coaching from a team of qualified professionals is on offer at the Academy.

These classes are taught out of the practice facilities at Aroeira, which is next to the two courses at the resort. There is a lengthy driving range and a short game area, so golfers can work on both their long and short games before taking on either of the two courses at the resort.

The Aroeira Golf Academy is also the home to a Junior Academy, which is a training centre for those aged 4 to 16. The purpose of the Junior Academy is to get children into the sport, and then to provide coaching for them to improve their technique, and the mental side of the game.

Aroeira Lisbon Hotel

The Aroeira Lisbon Hotel services the resort, with views of the two championship golf courses and much more from its rooms and suites. It brings together the charm of the capital city of Lisbon, with the sea and golf course views for an amazing stay.

There is a wide range of accommodation options at the Aroeira Lisbon Hotel, with something to suit all guests during a stay on the Portuguese coastline.

The standard rooms at Aroeira are sublime, and provide everything you need for a stay at the resort. From there, there are also rooms with views of either the gardens or pools, family rooms which hold two connecting rooms, and suites for the most luxurious of stays.

Sports, Activities and Wellness

Being located so close to the beach and the North Atlantic Ocean, it is no surprise that the Aroeira Resort is big on watersports. Surfing, kitesurfing and more are available, with surf lessons also a part of the resort’s offering when it comes to being out on the water.

The wellness space at the Aroeira Lisbon Resort is high quality.
