Northop Golf Club is just five miles from the Welsh border with England, in the country's northeastern section, with the course opening in 1994. 

 

John Jacobs, a former Ryder Cup player, was the man to design the golf course at Northop. It soon hosted the Welsh PGA National Championships, and it remains a test of a golfer’s ability, no matter what their level.

Northop Golf Club is one of the youngest courses on the NCG Top 100s: Wales list, having only opened in 1994. It was designed by former Ryder Cup player John Jacobs. 

 

The course hosted the Welsh PGA National Championships shortly after opening and has also hosted the PGA Cheshire & North Wales Open, which it continues to do so each year. 

Jacobs’ design at Northop takes golfers through a range of parkland holes, with plenty of tall trees making the fairways narrow and tight. It is a Par 72 layout measuring just shy of 6,400 yards, with the back nine being the longer side of the course. A good score at Northop will require accurate tee shots and being able to find the right parts of the greens. 

 

The opening hole is a great three-shotter, a 540-yard par 5 to kick off a round at Northop. The 2nd is the opening par 3 on the course and plays a club more than its yardage as it plays up the slope. The next three are gentle par 4s, with the 3rd being a dog-leg right. 4 and 5 are 290 yards or less, with the 5th being the shortest par 4 on the course, and one that is drivable. However, there is a water hazard to the right of the green so anyone going for it must hit a straight shot.  

 

The 6th is a 160-yard par 3, and the 8th is a short par 5. At just 500 yards, the 8th is a particularly good birdie chance for anyone that finds the fairway with their tee shot. The closing hole on the front nine is a severe dog-leg left, with four bunkers surrounding the green. 10 follows in a similar vein, but there is water down the left side of the first part of the fairway. You then turn left at the end of the trees and hit across the narrow stream to a well-guarded green. 11 is then the longest hole on the property at more than 550 yards, and it is a double dog-leg par 5, first to the left and then to the right. 

 

The 12th and 13th are par 4s, both under 350 yards from the tips, with the 14th being the third of the par 3s. At 190 yards, it is the longest of the quartet of short holes at Northop, and golfers must take enough club to clear the front bunker. 15 is the last par 5 and begins the closing stretch, one that includes two par 4s of more than 400 yards. They come at the 16th and 18th, with the closing hole at Northop being a 428-yarder. There is a slight dog-leg in the fairway and the green is raised making it play even longer. A par, or even a bogey, and you’ll walk off relatively happy.  

Where is Northop Golf Club located?  
Northop Golf Club is the northeasternmost golfing venue on the NCG Top 100s: Wales list, sitting just a couple of miles from the Welsh border with England. The North Wales Expressway (A55) runs to the north of the club, with the A5119 to the west, alongside Soughton Hall.  

 

The closest train stations are around five minutes from Northop Golf Club, with Flint, Hawarden, and Buckley all equidistant from Northop Golf Club. Trains from Holyhead travel through Flint to Crewe, Cardiff and London Euston, while both Hawarden and Buckley are on the same train line – that runs from Bidston to Wrexham. 

 

With its close location to the English border, the two nearest major airports are Liverpool John Lennon Airport and Manchester Airport, both within a 45-minute drive from Northop Golf Club. The latter of the two airports is the busiest in the United Kingdom outside of London.

Along with the 18-hole course, Northop is also home to a driving range, where Steve Priest offers coaching and tuition. The range and the short game area next to it allow golfers to hone their skills before taking on the course.
