Course Information

Seaside golf at its very best, North Foreland is situated on the Kent coast at the point where the English Channel becomes the North Sea. This clifftop-downland course offers a view of the sea from every tee and every green. North Foreland is a free running chalk-based course, and possibly Kent’s premier all-year-round course; this fact is confirmed by the number of returning visitors and societies. Originally a nine-hole course, it was expanded when Lord Northcliffe bought additional land in 1912 and employed Fowler & Simpson to design the full 18.

Now the course has matured into an Open Qualifying Course when the championship is held at Royal St George’s. The Main course comprises four par 3s, three par 5s and 11 par 4s. While the broad fairways instil a sense of relaxation and confidence off the tee, you must not be fooled as strategically-placed bunkers lie in wait.

It is in many respects North Foreland is a second-shot course as approaches needs careful thought; making and holding the greens is deceptively tricky.

The three short holes look innocuous enough, but fire off line and recovery is far from easy. The 18th is the longest par 3 and is a fine test, requiring both length and accuracy.

The par 5s are fair and straightforward until you encounter the wind. And let’s be honest, sea breezes are a major part of this and every other coastal course. On average, most of the par 4s can be reached in two, but the 8th, 9th and 17th both offer a considerable challenge and one feels successful with a bogey on each.

North Foreland is also blessed with one of, if not the, best 18-hole par-3 courses in the country; its firm quick greens make it a challenge for every standard of golfer.
