The Mount Juliet Estate has been around for almost four centuries, dating back to the Manor House in 1750. Since then, it has evolved into a sublime golf resort. A Jack Nicklaus Signature Course design that has hosted both the DP World Tour and PGA Tour, along with The Academy, an indulgent spa and a Michelin-starred restaurant are just some of the key notes of the estate.  

 

Situated in the southeast corner of Ireland, Mount Juliet is somewhat on its own in terms of other resorts, but it makes up for that with its quality. The Manor House and Hunter’s Yard both provide accommodation at Mount Juliet, with the latter hosting family-friendly options, including Double Double Rooms. The Manor House only has 32 rooms, but they are all unique and designed individually. There are a pair of high-quality dining options. The Hound is a family-friendly restaurant which serves great food in a casual environment. Meanwhile, Lady Helen is the Michelin-starred restaurant at Mount Juliet, offering a fine dining experience for its guests. Hunter’s Yard is also the home to the spa and wellness facility at the resort, with a swimming pool, sauna and steam room all on offer, along with massages and treatments. There is also a gym for those who want to stay active during their stay in the south of Ireland. 

 

Make your way outside, and there is plenty to do for those wanting to stay active. The Jack Nicklaus Signature Course needs no introduction, as a host of the Irish Open on the DP World Tour, and the WGC-American Express Championship on two occasions. The course, opened in the early 1990s, might be of championship level, but offers good scoring chances for all who play thanks to a range of tees. There is also The Academy, where players can practice before playing. TopTracer is used in the sheltered bays on the driving range, while there is also a short game area.  

 

Other activities at Mount Juliet include horse riding and equestrian, archery, fishing, cycling and hiking. There are also walking and running trails around the estate, while the playground and fairy garden can keep the kids entertained during your stay at Mount Juliet.

Mount Juliet is one of the few resorts on the NCG Top 100s: GB&I Golf Resorts list to be home to a Jack Nicklaus Signature Course. Some have said lift Mount Juliet and place it anywhere in the world, and it would not look out of place. It is not what you might call a true Irish course, but the course condition and layout still makes for a challenging round of golf.  

 

Whatever people might say, the Jack Nicklaus Signature Course achieved championship status just a couple of years after it opened. 1993 saw the Irish Open move to Mount Juliet for a three-year period, where Sir Nick Faldo, Bernhard Langer and Sam Torrance were victorious. It returned in 2021, with Lucas Herbert taking victory. Poland’s Adrian Meronk won the last Irish Open to be hosted at Mount Juliet, in 2022. It also played host to the WGC-American Express Championship when the tournament was on its European leg in the early 2000s. Tiger Woods and Ernie Els were the two men to have won when the World Golf Championships were at Mount Juliet.  

 

So, is it a course for professionals? Not necessarily... It can also be a course for the amateurs as well. Mount Juliet is a very scorable golf course with wide fairways and large greens. Do not be fooled though, as the River Nore and several lakes supply the water hazards that are seen on six of the 18 holes. There are also 80 bunkers on the property, to catch any stray shots.  

 

Three holes on the Jack Nicklaus Signature Course feature in Jeff Barr’s ‘1000 Golf Holes You Must Play Before You Die’. The 3rd is the first of those, and it is the first hole at Mount Juliet that sees water come into play. Golfers must carry a lake to reach the green, hitting it at least 170 yards. In the northern corner of the resort lies the 13th, the hardest hole on the property. At more than 400 yards from the majority of tees, amateurs will be hitting at least a long iron over water into the green. The final hole on Jeff Barr’s radar was the closing 18th. Measuring 480 yards from the tips, a long drive has to find the fairway. From there, playing off a downhill lie, over water and sand to the green. Good luck! 

Golf is not the only activity that guests at Mount Juliet can enjoy during their stay at the Irish resort. In terms of outdoor activities, there is archery, cycling, fishing, hiking and equestrian, along with walking trails and picnics for those more inclined to relax.  

 

Talking of relaxation, Mount Juliet is also the home to a luxurious spa and wellness centre. The Health Club, located in Hunter’s Yard, has a state-of-the-art gym which features cardio machines, free weights and much more. There is also a 15-metre swimming pool, sauna, steam room, and the opportunity to indulge in a massage or treatment during your stay.  

 

There is also plenty for the kids to do as well. There is a playground for them to roam around in, along with a wildflower meadow and a fairy garden. Family breaks are a key part of Mount Juliet and there are usually offers year-round for families looking for an Irish escape.

There are two main dining options at the Mount Juliet Estate – Lady Helen and The Hound. The former offers Michelin-star fine dining, serving Irish cuisine. The Hound is a family-friendly venue, serving pub food and more refined tastes.  

Where is Mount Juliet?  
Mount Juliet sits in the southeastern part of Ireland, in County Kilkenny. It is just a few miles off the M9, between Stoneyford and Thomastown. Waterford, Kilkenny and Clonmel are the nearest cities, all within 45 minutes from Mount Juliet.  

What is the nearest airport and station to Mount Juliet?  
The biggest and busiest airport in the country – Dublin Airport – is around 90 miles to the northeast, about a 90-minute drive. Dublin Airport operates flights to most European countries and to North America, with almost 30 million passengers travelling through the airport in 2022.  

 

Mount Juliet is within three miles of Thomastown Railway Station. Thomastown is on the line that operates between Kildare and Waterford Plunkett, with regular trains each day.  

What golf facilities does Mount Juliet offer?  
Along with the championship golf course, Mount Juliet also is host to The Academy. This is made up of a sheltered driving range, with all bays using the latest TopTracer technology, which provides feedback on all shots hit, as well as allowing players to enjoy themselves with fun games. The range also has a row of grass tees in front of the building so during the summer, golfers can play off the same turf. The Academy also has a short game area and putting green to allow for players to work on their games before taking on the Jack Nicklaus Signature Course. 

 

The Academy also plays host to a dedicated Callaway Fitting Studio and Odyssey Fitting Suite. These can help players get the right clubs for their game and their swing, to help them improve quickly.

There is also the option to have a lesson using TrackMan technology in a specialised coaching bay on the driving range.
