Carnoustie (Championship)

Tucked away on the idyllic south-east coast of Scotland, Monifieth is home to two wonderful links courses. The club faces stiff competition given its close proximity to Carnoustie and St. Andrew's but more than holds its own in a region synonymous with links golf. Golf has had a home in Monifieth for longer than you might expect, as records trace the game back as far 1639 in the seaside town. A nine-hole course was originally founded in 1845 before being extended to the full 18 in 1880. The layout proved so popular that a second nine-hole course, now the Ashludie Course, was added in 1912.

Legendary course architect James Braid completed design work on the layout to form a compact yet challenging 18-hole course. At 5,123 yards the course is unlikely to intimidate you in terms of length, but promises to thoroughly test every other aspect of your game.

Accurate driving and smart iron-play are of fundamental importance for those hoping to get within range of a tricky par of 68. The jewel in the crown at Monifieth is undoubtedly the Medal Course. An array of narrow fairways, lush semi-rough, penal heavy rough and lightning-fast greens make for a rugged test of any player's mettle.

The course's pedigree has been consistently rewarded through selection as an Open qualifying venue whenever the championship is held at the nearby Carnoustie. The opening six holes at the par-71, 6,650-yard track meander alongside the railway line as it moves its way away from the clubhouse.

A fabulous middle section boasts an array of small greens that reward precise, deft approach play. The par-five ninth is a particular gem with its tough approach to a tightly-bunkered putting surface. A lovely short par-three at the 14th hole sets you on your way home and offers a bit of respite after a series of holes that can make or break your round.

The clubhouse provides stunning views of the Medal Course and a bar area complete with a pool room and Sky TV. The venue lies only 15 minutes away from Dundee and is easily accessible by road.
