Bowood Spa & Golf Resort Overview | NCG Top 100s: GB&I Golf Resorts

A Dave Thomas Championship Design

The Championship course at Bowood is recognised as one of the area’s toughest and best kept. Designed by the late Dave Thomas – the man behind some of the UK’s top courses, including Ryder Cup host The Belfry – it sits in 2,000 acres of listed parkland and was mapped out originally by the famous Capability Brown.

Off the tips it offers a stern test to even the best players and measures a whopping 7,309 yards. This, coupled with well-placed hazards and excellent greens, saw Bowood host the prestigious Challenge Tour Championship for four consecutive years. Thanks to two other sets of tees – you can play Bowood at a more manageable 6,566 or 6,878 yards – all handicaps can enjoy the highly manicured fairways and greens.

The long par-4 8th is the hardest hole on the course for a reason – and a real card wrecker. Measuring a whopping 463 yards off the tips, it has an inviting downhill tee shot and a severe dog-leg that you must treat with respect – getting greedy and deciding to try take too much off it can bring a substantial number into play. However, you can make a fast start at the par-3 2nd, which offers an early opportunity to make a red number. It is played uphill and guarded by a stream but, considering there are two par 3s measuring over 200 yards, it is one of the more straightforward holes.

3 and 4 are back-to-back par 5s, but neither are genuine birdie opportunities as there are plenty of bunkers to catch any wayward shots. The 5th and 14th share a double green, with the two holes separated by heather and sand. The closing hole at Bowood is a tricky dog-leg par 4. Water on the left of the fairway for the final 100 yards can come into play with longer approach shots into the green, while three greenside bunkers await any errant shots.
