You could spend a lovely full day at Lumine as there are 36 holes of championship golf here… as well as a terrific lunch.
The Lakes is technically the No.1 course at this Troon-managed resort. It is designed by Greg Norman on flat marshland that has been so painstakingly preserved it's become a sanctuary for rare birds.
Norman's design is spread out over a large area and requires a lot of straight hitting to avoid sand and water. This 6,948-yard brute will challenge even the many national squads who use Lumine as a winter training camp.
We much prefer the Hills though, so much so that it was a contender for the new Continental Top 100. Incorporating super views as a result of frequent changes in elevation and no real estate, it also has plenty of cool holes.
It is for the most part cut through pine trees, but there is a great variety of holes both visually and strategically. It starts with a downhill tee shot that encourages you to think you are really going to enjoy this round and it is not a deceiving hint at what is to come. In holes such as the beautiful short 8th over water, the even better short 10th, and the excellent back-to-back par 4s at 12 and 13, the Hills is one of the highlights of the trip.
It ends with a short par 4 whose green is overlooked by its own clubhouse atop a cliff-face of light orange rock. The fun nine-hole Ruins course completes the picture.
