La Cala (Asia)

La Cala (Asia)

The 'smallest' of the three courses at this Andalucian resort, but don't mistake that for 'afterthought'. Two facts illustrate this.

Asia gets in our Spanish Top 50, which is a decent guide as to its quality because the competition is naturally pretty high.

And it was also the first of La Cala's courses to have its greens renovated - and was such a success that GM Sean Corte-Real is rolling the project out across all three.

Similar to Gullane No.2, it starts with an uphill, narrow hole that tells you this course has something about it. The two-step tier in the 2nd and the cool 3rd backs that feeling up.

Surrounded by Arizona mountain-esque backdrops and a funky topography, you immediately feel this is one of the better 'third' courses you've ever played.

Trees are usually set well back from fairways, which are usually undulating and gives it a very natural feel. Despite the changes in elevation very, it is very walkable.

You'll enjoy the small funky greens, and features such as the saddle fairway on the 4th, leading to a testing approach over distinctive ground - thee are so many humps and hollows in the ground it looks like a pile of boiled potatoes - to a small green.

This is resort golf, but not as we know it.

Asia re-opened last year after being closed for two months during the switch to Bermuda, which will improve sustainability and year-round conditioning, while all its bunkers fully renovated. The results are spectacularly good.
