Westerwood | NCG Top 100s: GB&I Golf Resorts

Westerwood, or the Glasgow Westerwood Spa & Golf Resort to give the venue its full name, is one of several Scottish venues on the NCG Top 100s: GB&I Golf Resorts list, but it is the only one that sits directly between Glasgow and Edinburgh. Cumbernauld is the town, and Seve Ballesteros was the designer of the golf course. Add in a hotel run by QHotels and DoubleTree by Hilton, and it’s the perfect place to stay for a weekend!

The Lanarkshire venue is the proud host to one of few Seve Ballesteros-designed golf courses in the United Kingdom. The Heritage is the only other resort on the NCG Top 100s: GB&I Golf Resorts list to be blessed with the Spaniard’s designs. Westerwood’s course winds its way through trees, bunkers and plenty of danger, but also gives scoring opportunities to those that can miss all the trouble.

The Health Club and Spa is the perfect spot to relax following a tough day on the course. There is a fully equipped gym with the latest equipment, including cardio, resistance and free weights, while the swimming pool, sauna and steam room are great to relax in. The spa has a range of treatment rooms and qualified therapists on hand for massages and treatments.

QHotels have teamed up with DoubleTree by Hilton to perfect the accommodation that is on offer at the Glasgow Westerwood Spa & Golf Resort. Guest Rooms come in three forms – Classic, Family and Accessible – while there are also Deluxe Rooms and One Bedroom Suites, the latter of which is the best option when it comes to accommodation at the Scottish venue.

Westerwood Overview | NCG Top 100s: GB&I Golf Resorts

A Seve Special

There aren’t many places in the United Kingdom that can say their golf course was designed by the great Seve Ballesteros. Westerwood is one of them! The Spaniard’s Par 71 layout at the Cumbernauld resort winds its way through the trees, measuring just over 6,300 yards from the black tees, and it is bookended with a pair of par 5s.

The 1st is a dog-leg left par 5 measuring 510 yards. The longer hitters may fancy this in two, but for most it will be three shots to get the green. The 2nd is a 225-yard par 3, with the 3rd being an acute dog-leg right before you cross the road. 6 is the longest par 4 on the course at more than 450 yards, while the closing hole on the front nine is the hardest on the card. The 9th has a stream running down the right side of the fairway, and then one across the front of the green.

Despite the 12th being 285 yards, it is not a drivable par 4. It is a narrow hole that turns to the right around what feels like a forest from the tee. A long iron and a wedge is the safest play. 13 is then the shortest hole on the course, while the 15th is the signature hole on the property. The hole is surrounded by a rockface, with the hole known as the ‘Waterfall Hole’. The course finishes with the longest hole at Westerwood, the 545-yard par 5 18th.

QHotels x DoubleTree by Hilton

The Glasgow Westerwood Spa & Golf Resort is blessed to have influence from both QHotels and DoubleTree by Hilton. With two well-known hotel brands on hand, you know that the accommodation is going to be up to an incredible standard, and that is exactly the case at Westerwood.

The Guest Rooms are the standard offering at the Lanarkshire resort, with these coming in both Family and Accessible form as well, the latter for those guests that require a room with adaptations to enjoy a comfortable stay. Grab bars, a wet room, and space for wheelchairs are just some of the changes made to the rooms.

The Family Rooms can come equipped with either a sofa bed or two extra beds, depending on the size of the family, while the Deluxe Rooms offer another layer of luxury, with fluffy bathrobes and exquisite toiletries. The best offerings at Westerwood are the One Bedroom Suites. Some of these come equipped with a balcony looking out over the countryside or the golf course, depending on which side of the hotel the room is.

There are two restaurants on site at the Glasgow Westerwood Spa & Golf Resort – the Flemings Restaurant and the Grill. The former is the main eatery, while the Grill is the best spot for a light bite. There is also the opportunity to enjoy Afternoon Tea and room service, along with a breakfast buffet each morning at Westerwood.

Glasow Westerwood Health Club

Like all QHotels venues, Westerwood has a state-of-the-art Health Club. There are tennis courts outside, along with an ultramodern fitness centre, which features the latest gym equipment including elliptical, resistance and cardio machines, along with free weights. There is also a fitness studio, fitness classes and personal training on site.

The heated indoor pool allows guests to have a swim, or to relax, while the sauna, steam room, jacuzzi and relaxation room add to the spa’s facilities. Eight treatment rooms are available for guests to indulge in any form of massage or treatment that they could wish for, with qualified therapists and Elemis products being used.
