Stoke by Nayland Overview | NCG Top 100s: GB&I Golf Resorts

Two 18-Hole Courses

The challenging and stunning Gainsborough and Constable courses are well-established with lakes, streams, and mature woodland. The designs skilfully incorporate the natural beauty of the land, and, with conservation a priority, more than 60,000 trees have been planted.

The Gainsborough course measures in at over 7,000 yards, while the Constable is the shorter of the two at just under 6,500. Four large lakes and undulating terrain on will play on the mind of golfers of all levels on both courses, which build up to spectacular finishing holes, which present a formidable drive over one of the large lakes, to a plateau green with the clubhouse beckoning beyond.

Stoke by Nayland has plenty of championship pedigree having played host to a range of international competitions, including the Ladies European Tour Access Series, European Challenger Tour, PGA EuroPro Tour and the European Senior Tour.

Gainsborough Course
The Par 71 Gainsborough Course is the longer of the two courses at Stoke by Nayland, playing at more than 7,000 yards off the championship black tees. If there isn’t water, then out of bounds comes into play and if there isn’t out of bounds, then there are plenty of trees for you to get caught out by.

The 10th is the signature hole on the Gainsborough with players having to hit across the same lake on both their tee shot and approach. The drive on 10 is played across the lake with the water then running down the right side of the fairway. From there, the green sits on the other side of the lake meaning that the approach goes back across, but there is also out of bounds behind the green, so club selection on the approach is critical.

Constable Course
The second course at Stoke by Nayland is the Constable Course. Shorter than its bigger brother, the Constable is still a tricky proposition for golfers of all abilities. Just under 6,500 yards and with less out of bounds than the Gainsborough, there are scoring opportunities, but there are also plenty of trees for you to avoid.

The course culminates in a 207-yard par 3 played over water with the clubhouse in the background. The tee shot requires at least 140 yards to cover the water, but everything past the hazard slopes back towards it. The green also slopes from back to front. Take a par on 18 and grab yourself a well-earned drink in the clubhouse!
