Telford Hotel | NCG Top 100s: GB&I Golf Resorts

The Telford Hotel is one of several venues in the Midlands, and one of several QHotels resorts that stake a claim on a place on the NCG Top 100s: GB&I Golf Resorts list. The QHotels accommodation is comfortable and luxurious, along with the health club and spa. Add in a championship 18-hole golf course and beautiful practice facilities, and you get the Telford Hotel.

The golf course was first opened in 1976, and it achieved championship status just a few years later, hosting the News of the World Under-23 Matchplay. Ian Woosnam was among the winners of the competition while it was at the Telford Hotel. The course winds its way through tree-lined fairways, with strategically placed bunkers and a pair of water hazards also catching your eye when you get to them. There is also a full-length driving range, putting green and the ability to receive coaching and tuition on site.

The 114-room hotel, managed by QHotels, offers quality, comfort and luxury, just as you would expect from a nationwide chain of hotels. There is a wide range of rooms on offer at the Telford Hotel, from Classic Rooms – which come in Twin, Double, King, Family and Accessible form – all the way up to the Feature Rooms. The latter are the best of the best at the hotel, with the Feature King Rooms being the most luxurious and comfortable choice in the range.

As with all QHotels, the resort also has a state-of-the-art Health Club and Spa on site. The health club is home to a fully equipped gym, which has the latest Life Fitness technology and equipment – cardiovascular, elliptical and resistance machines. The spa makes use of a 15-metre swimming pool, sauna, steam room and relaxation room, along with the space for massages and treatments, all of which can be booked in by guests.

Telford Hotel Overview | NCG Top 100s: GB&I Golf Resorts

A Championship 18

The Telford Hotel is blessed with a championship standard course, one that used to host the News of the World Under-23s Matchplay in the 1970s and 1980s. Ian Woosnam, who went on to win the Masters later in his career, secured his first professional victory at the Telford Hotel in 1979, three years after the course opened. The Par 72 layout plays up to 6,700 yards from the back tees, but there are a range of teeing options to make a round enjoyable for golfers of all abilities.

The course opens with a tricky dog-leg right that will test how ready you are to get going. 2 is the first of four par 5s with the 3rd being the opening par 3 – the shortest hole on the property. Strategically placed bunkers and tree-lined fairways and greens provide the challenges in the early going at the Telford Hotel. The 8th is the signature hole on the course, and the first sight of water. It is a sharp dog-leg to the right, with the approach shot to the green played over a pond.

Water next appears at the 15th – a drivable par 4 at just 315 yards. Longer hitters may be tempted to take this on, but with thick trees to the right and long of the green, anyone going for it must hit their drives with utmost accuracy. 17 is the last par 5 on the course, and the longest hole at the Telford Hotel, before the closing hole brings you back to the clubhouse. The 18th is a par 4 that is just shy of 400 yards, and with a huge bunker to the front right of the green to avoid with your approach.

QHotels Accommodation

The latter offers a room with adaptations for guests who require, including lowered baths, alarms that are direct to reception and space for wheelchairs. There are also family options in the Superior and Feature Rooms, for those families that want that extra slice of luxury.

The Deluxe and Superior Rooms add another layer of luxury to the Classic Rooms, with the Feature Rooms being the best of the best at the Telford Hotel. Views of the Severn Valley Gorge and the Ironbridge, with the Feature King Rooms providing space to relax with a lounge area.

Restaurant 1779 is the place to go for your evening meal, with a wide range of cuisines on offer. The Gorge Bar is open throughout the day for drinks and snacks, while Afternoon Tea and buffet breakfasts are also available.
