Emporda (Forest)

Emporda (Forest)

From Girona's efficient airport, it is a very straightforward journey towards the coast for the four loops of consistently good and varied golf at Emporda.

If you only fancy 18, your choice is clear – and it feels superfluous to go on to describe the four loops given the names of the two courses they combine to form are Links and Forest.

The Forest course here - the Links, which is also in our Spain Top 50 - is as expected routed through umbrella pines common to Iberia and Belek, and indeed it has a real feel of the latter's Gloria or Sueno.

The fairways are not bulldozed into flat corridors between the trees though, varying from the gentle ripples of an unmade bed to more dramatic mounds that skiers would recognise as a pronounced mogul field.

It all fits together notably seamlessly, with stand-out holes including lovely par 3s at 2 and 5 as well as a risk-reward, split-fairway (by a pond) sporty par 4 that ends on a slippered green. The 16th is a stand-out among the classy-looking holes on the back nine.

There is often a premium on approach shots, with greens either set on angles, extremely well bunkered, feature acute run-offs or set hard to tree lines. Or sometimes a combination of all three.
