Carden Park is one of the leading venues on the NCG Top 100s: GB&I Golf Resorts list that is based in the northwest of England. The resort is one of the most well-rounded venues on the list, with two championship golf courses, a 197-room hotel, glorious spa facilities and outdoor activities to boot. 

 

When it comes to golf, Carden Park is blessed with two championship level golf courses. The Cheshire Course is the older of the two, while 18-time major champion Jack Nicklaus put his name to the second course. The Nicklaus is the 7,000-yard brute at the northwest venue. There are plenty of other outdoor activities as well at Carden Park. There is a high-wire adventure course that finishes ten metres above the ground, with a zipline or free fall to get back to ground level. Like several other venues on the NCG Top 100s: GB&I Golf Resorts list, Carden Park is the proud host of two courses. The Cheshire Course was the first at Carden Park, with the Nicklaus Course joining to make it a stunning 36-hole venue.  

 

Cheshire Course 

The Cheshire Course was the first 18-hole layout to be designed and constructed at Carden Park. Measuring more than 6,800 yards from the tips, the Cheshire is a lengthy course, but there are a range of teeing options to make it an easier challenge. 

 

Unlike most courses, the Cheshire opens with a par 3, but that does not mean that it is easy start to the round. The tee shot must be threaded between two big oak trees, while the green slopes from back to front. The 15th is the shortest hole on the course at just 145 yards from the back tees and plays downhill to a large green. The final hole is on a clifftop and offers views of the entire Carden Park estate as your round ends.  

 

Nicklaus Course 

The Nicklaus Course was designed by 18-time major champion Jack Nicklaus, along with his son Steve. It measures just over 7,000 yards from the black tees, making it somewhat of a brute. Like most of the Golden Bear’s designs though, it has those special characteristics. It is mentioned in ‘Golf World’s 1000 Best Courses In Britain and Ireland’. 

 

“The course embodies the ethos of the Nicklaus design – golf should be fun, challenging, and fair. Everything is in front of the player with no blind shots, hidden obstacles, or surprises. Two holes, the 7th and 15th, embody the characteristic Nicklaus double-fairway option with the emphasis purely on risk and reward.” 

Those two holes mentioned, the 7th and 15th, are true Nicklaus holes. The former has two fairways either side of a water hazard, while there is then another stream that runs in front of the green. Players hitting shorter drives and aiming for the right section of fairway may then want to lay up and play the hole as a par 5. The 15th features a lateral water hazard which runs diagonally along the hole. Again, shorter hitters may have to play it as a par 5. 

The penultimate hole on the Nicklaus Course is the signature hole, though. Bigger hitters may choose to go for the green over the water, with a carry of around 255 yards from the back tee. Most though will aim at the hotel and have a wedge or short iron into the green. The closing hole is a double dog-leg par 5 which just keeps bending round to the right. Longer hitters may choose to try and fly the trees with their second shot and go for the green but there is plenty of trouble lying in wait.  

There is a vast array of accommodation at Carden Park, with almost 200 rooms and suites available in the hotel. Six of those are accessible rooms for those guests that require a room with adaptations to make a stay at the hotel as comfortable as possible.  

 

The Twin and Double Rooms are the standard offering at the hotel, with the former having a pair of double beds. There are also Twin Rooms with views of the estate, while the King Rooms all come with estate views. There are 18 suites at Carden Park, with a mixture of the Courtyard and Luxury Suites available for guests to stay in.  

 

The Vines Restaurant is the resort’s fine dining experience, while Redmond’s Brasserie provides a more laid-back, family-friendly offering. Elements is the restaurant at The Spa at Carden Park, overlooking the Spa Garden. Goldie’s Lounge and Morgan’s Bar are the relaxing spaces to enjoy a drink in the evening, while Jack’s Bar overlooks the Cheshire Course.  

Golf is not the only outdoor activity that you can enjoy during a stay at Carden Park. Vertigo is an incredible high-wire course for all abilities. It ends at the top of a 10-metre high-wire tower, and from there, you have two options of getting back down to ground level. You can either take the free fall on to a giant stunt pillow, or you can enjoy the 210 metre zip line. There is also a climbing wall as part of the Vertigo set at Carden Park. 

 

For those who want to keep their feet on the ground, there is the opportunity to do some clay pigeon shooting, fire air rifles or partake in archery. Segway tours, 4x4 off-roading and much more are available as well.

Where is Carden Park?  
Carden Park is the leading venue on the NCG Top 100s: GB&I Golf Resorts list in Cheshire. It is just a couple of miles from England’s border with Wales, with Wrexham being the nearest city to the resort, ten miles to the west. 

What is the nearest airport and station to Carden Park?  
Both Liverpool John Lennon Airport and Manchester Airport are within an hour’s drive from Carden Park, both north of the resort. Manchester is the busier of the two, and the second biggest airport in the country behind London Heathrow. Manchester operates daily flights to most European countries and further afield, including the United States and the Middle East.  

 

Wrexham Central and Chester are the two main train stations in the region, but both are at least ten miles away from Carden Park. From there, either a taxi or bus service would have to be used to get to the resort.  

What golf facilities does Carden Park offer?  
Along with two championship golf courses, Carden Park also has a TopTracer driving range, allowing guests to work on their golf swings whilst undercover from the elements, and with the ability to see data regarding their shots.  

Does Carden Park offer golf lessons?  
Coaching is available from a team of qualified PGA professionals, with lessons available at the driving range at Carden Park. Using both TopTracer and specialised TrackMan technology, the four-man team of professionals can identify problem areas and help to improve your game, no matter your age or ability.
