Oulton Hall | NCG Top 100s: GB&I Golf Resorts

Oulton Hall is one of several Yorkshire-based venues on the NCG Top 100s: GB&I Golf Resorts list, and it is clear to see why it earns a place. There are 27 holes designed by Dave Thomas along with an immaculate clubhouse. Away from the golf, there is a beautiful health cup and spa along with glorious accommodation courtesy of QHotels.

Former Ryder Cup player and world-renowned golf course architect Dave Thomas was the man behind the design of all 27 holes at Oulton Hall. He started with the 18-hole Calverley Course, before coming back to design the 9-hole Hall Course to complete the golf offering at the Yorkshire venue. There is also a driving range with TrackMan technology and a great short game area.

The Health Club and Spa at Oulton Hall provides a suitable space to work out. There is a fully equipped gym with the latest cardiovascular and weight machines, along with a wide range of free weights. There is also space for fitness classes and personal training. The swimming pool, sauna, steam room and jacuzzi are also a part of the Health Club, with guests of the Spa able to enjoy these facilities, along with the possibility of a massage or treatment.

The accommodation on site at Oulton Hall comes courtesy of QHotels, with the chain featuring several times on our list of the best golf resorts in GB&I. Even the Classic Rooms offer comfort and elegance, while the range of Deluxe and Superior Rooms add an extra touch of luxury. There are also Family Rooms and Accessible Rooms available, along with four Suites for the most luxurious stay at the QHotels Oulton Hall.

Oulton Hall Overview | NCG Top 100s: GB&I Golf Resorts

27 Dave Thomas Holes

Like most venues on the NCG Top 100s: GB&I Golf Resorts list, Oulton Hall is home to two courses. Former Ryder Cup player and world-renowned golf course architect Dave Thomas was the man behind the designs, with the 18-hole Calverley Course and the 9-hole Hall Course on offer at the resort.

Calverley Course
The Calverley Course is the 18-hole championship offering at Oulton Hall, with Thomas placing bunkers strategically throughout the course. There are no real water hazards on the Calverley Course, with much of the danger coming from how tight and compact the layout is. Anything offline will usually end up behind or in between trees so accuracy off the tee is necessary!

The Par 70 layout features four par 3s, the first of those coming at just the 2nd hole. The 6th, 11th and 14th are the others, with the latter being the longest on the course at 230 yards from the back tees. The 4th is the hardest hole on the course, a tough dog-leg right that is more than 430 yards from the tips, while the 12th is the longest hole. However, at only 520 yards for a par 5, it could be seen as a birdie opportunity if you don’t find the trees at any point.

The closing hall at Oulton Hall is a tricky dog-leg left, one that the longer hitter can try and take the ball over the corner. When you get round the turn, you have the backdrop of the beautiful clubhouse as you play your approach uphill to the green. With the clubhouse behind, you will fear hitting it long, but take one more club to deal with the incline.

Hall Course
The 9-hole Hall Course is on the eastern side of the resort and was also designed by Thomas as an extension of the resort. The Par 36 course is almost 3,200 yards long and is no walkover. There are back-to-back par 5s early on, with the 3rd being the longest hole on the property. The par 3s come at 7 and 9, with the Hall Course finishing on a 170-yard short hole.

QHotels Collection

The accommodation offered at Oulton Hall comes courtesy of QHotels, like several other venues on the NCG Top 100s: GB&I Golf Resorts list. The hotel’s modern wing was refurbished in 2022 and it is now arguably the main strength of the resort.

There is a sublime range of rooms and suites available at the QHotels Oulton Hall, from Classic Rooms all the way up to the variety of Suites. The Classic Rooms are the standard, while there is also a couple of Accessible Rooms for those that require a bedroom with adaptations.

There are also Deluxe and Superior Rooms and Family Rooms for those bringing their children to Oulton Hall. The best option at the QHotels is the range of Suites. There are four beautifully designed choices available, with two of those coming with their own separate living area to the bedroom.

Like many resorts, there are plenty of options when it comes to dining. For lighter bites in a relaxed setting, try the newly refurbished Claret Jug bar area, or head to the Calverley Grill for something a bit more formal. That’s all topped off by an opulent Champagne Bar.

Health Club & Spa

The Health Club at Oulton Hall is stunning, with a range of facilities for guests to enjoy. There is a fully equipped gym with cardiovascular and weight machines along with free weights. The Health Club also has a space for personal training and fitness classes, with the likes of spin classes and yoga on offer.

There is also an indoor heated swimming pool, while guests can enjoy a relaxing time in the jacuzzi, sauna and steam room at the Health Club. All these facilities can also be used by guests of the spa, where relaxation and rejuvenation are the key. A wide variety of massages and treatments are available, given by qualified therapists.
