Dalmahoy | NCG Top 100s: GB&I Golf Resorts

The Dalmahoy Hotel & Country Club has plenty to offer its guests, and it is one of the most historic venues on the NCG Top 100s: GB&I Golf Resorts list. The original house at Dalmahoy has been around for more than six centuries, and the venue is called Dalmahoy after taking the surname of the original family that lived in the building more than three centuries ago.

Golf began at Dalmahoy around a century ago, with James Braid designing the now famous East Course. The championship course at Dalmahoy has played host to the Scottish Seniors Open on six occasions, along with being the first European venue to host the Solheim Cup. Dalmahoy is also home to the West Course, which is much shorter than its bigger brother, but still provides a stern test for golfers of all abilities.

There is also a 9-hole pitch and putt course at Dalmahoy for those who don’t take the game too seriously, along with a floodlit driving range to allow everyone to practice their long games. In terms of activities, golf is not the only thing to do at the Scottish resort. There are two floodlit tennis courts outside, while the gym at the Leisure Club is fully equipped. A swimming pool, sauna and steam room offer suitable spaces to relax.

Accommodation-wise, Dalmahoy has something to suit all parties. From Classic and Family Rooms, through Superior and Deluxe to the Manor House Deluxe and Suites, all guests are catered for. There is plenty of gastronomic choice as well, with the James Braid Bar named after the man who designed the famous East Course.

Dalmahoy Overview | NCG Top 100s: GB&I Golf Resorts

A Solheim Cup Venue

Dalmahoy, like a lot of venues on the NCG Top 100s: GB&I Golf Resorts list, is the home to two 18-hole golf courses. Unlike most, though, it has been a host venue for the Solheim Cup. The resort has also hosted the Scottish Seniors Open on six occasions, with Sam Torrance and Neil Coles among the winners.

East Course
The East Course is the championship offering at Dalmahoy. Designed by James Braid, the course plays 7,400 yards from the championship tees. Luckily for us mere mortal, there are plenty of teeing options, with the members' competitions playing at a much nicer 6,700 yards.

It was on the East Course that the first ever Solheim Cup on European soil was held. After losing two years previously in the first edition of the competition, Team Europe recorded their first win after losing in the United States two years previous. The Scottish Seniors Open has called Dalmahoy home six times, most recently in 2008.

A renovation three years prior to that hosting of the Scottish Seniors Open saw two new holes added among the trees, with the new 13th and 14th holes bringing a narrow challenge. The 18th – named Solheim after its history – remains one of the signature holes on the Par 73 layout. It comes straight after a 245-yard par 3 and has water on the right from the tee and a split fairway which leads to a long second shot while the historic Dalmahoy House looks on.

West Course
The West Course is a great complementary layout to the East, offering something entirely different to its bigger sibling. It is more than 2,200 yards shorter than the East Course, but with narrow fairways and some quirky routings, it can definitely catch you out. For those that don’t have time for a full 18, the West Course can also be played as 9 or 13 holes, with both the 9th and 13th holes winding their way back to the hotel.

There are four drivable par 4s in the opening seven holes, measuring 269, 275, 270 and 261 yards, respectively. Each is relatively risk free, as there is no water, and if you do not stray too far offline, you won’t find yourself in the trees either. There are a few greenside bunkers in play on these four holes, but if you’re in one of those after just one shot, you’ll take it!

There is only one par 5 on the West Course, with it also being the longest and hardest hole on the Par 68 layout. The 13th is on the western boundary of the property, with out of bounds hugging the left side of the hole. Three fairway bunkers are in play, along with bunkers front left and front right at the green. Longer hitters could go for it in two, but there is plenty of trouble lying in wait.

Dalmahoy House

All of the accommodation offered at Dalmahoy comes under one roof, and there is a wide array to choose from. From Classic Rooms up to Manor House Deluxe Rooms and Suites, there is something for everyone at Dalmahoy.

The choices at the higher end of the scale at the Manor House Deluxe and the Suites. The former offers period features and views over the estate, while the Suites at Dalmahoy supply a spacious and modern living room that is separated from the bedroom to give guests their own little bit of privacy.

Leisure Club

Away from the golf course, there is plenty to get involved in during a stay at Dalmahoy. There is a pair of outdoor tennis courts, while the gym at Dalmahoy is fully equipped with free weights, cardiovascular machines, elliptical machines and much more. A range of fitness classes can also be undertaken by qualified professionals.

The Leisure Club at Dalmahoy is also home to an indoor heated swimming pool, along with a sauna and steam room to relax in. Yoga classes are also available, while there is a walking trail around the estate for those that want to get out into nature.
