This Tenerife course was designed by Jose Gancedo, who successfully used the natural features of this former banana plantations to create a fine course.

Included in his assimilation of what he was given on the site is the use of low stone-wall terraces across the sloping fairways.

Adeje has distinct halves, with the front nine being largely either uphill or downhill and the second half mainly played across the slopes.

There is a neat scorecard of six par 3s, six par 4s and six par 5s, with the one-shot arguably the highlights.

This is on first glance what we might call 'holiday golf' and it's true the fairways are relatively wide  but there is enough about Adeje to punish you if you are wayward.

Also the par 5s are long enough to be three-shot holes for all standards.

It begins with a couple of warm up holes but by time you've played the par 3s at 5 and 7 you are very glad you came. In amongst them the 4th and 8th stand out on one of the Canaries' top venues. Oh, and the sea views are predictably exhilarating.

In terms of conditioning, Paspalum fairways and tifEagle greens are kept in good condition all year round by recycled water. Local black volcanic sand in bunkers has been replaced with white sand.
