Clyne Golf Club, located just a few miles outside the city of Swansea, features a Harry Colt-designed golf course, one that has been around for more than a century now. 

 

Opened in 1921 as a nine-hole course, with the second nine added just a year later, Colt’s design is in two out-and-back loops. Redevelopments started in 1995, and in more recent years, the course has played host to a number of Welsh and county championships.

The legendary Harry Colt – designer of Swinley Forest, the New Course at Sunningdale and both the East and West Courses at Wentworth – was the man behind the design at Clyne Golf Club, which opened in 1921.  

 

The first half of the course to be constructed would become the back nine, with the front nine opening just under a year later to create the 18-hole layout at Clyne. 1995 saw the start of redevelopments and changes to the course. 

 

The club celebrated its centenary in 2021, and that year it hosted the Wales Girls and Boys Championships, playing host to both the Under 14s and Under 16s tournaments. Clyne has also hosted the South Wales Girls Championships and a range of Glamorgan County Championships in its recent history. 

Colt’s design remains largely visible, and today, the course plays as a Par 72. However, it is not the longest course in the world, measuring just over 6,400 yards, so there are scoring opportunities throughout a round on the south coast of Wales. It runs in two loops of nine holes, both of which make their way back to the clubhouse, so golfers can choose to play just nine instead of 18. 

 

The first three par 4s on the course are all 340 yards or under, and therefore, birdie opportunities if you find the fairway. They come at 1, 2 and 5, with the 2nd being a dog-leg left, while the 5th is a sharp dog-leg right. The 3rd is the opening par 5 on the course, and one of two less than 500 yards. 4 is the first par 3, with three bunkers in front of the green and plenty of trouble behind, so club selection is crucial. 

 

The 7th is the shortest of the par 5s at Clyne, measuring just 480 yards. However, as it is so narrow, the hole is also the hardest on the course. It is followed by a 200-yard par 3 as the turn shows some bite following the comfortable start. The 9th is a 475-yard par 4, and depending on the wind, it could become a three-shotter. The second nine begins with two testing par 4s, before the short 12th. At just 160 yards, club selection is key to make par, or even birdie. 

 

14 and 16 are the par 5s on the back nine, with the latter being the longest hole on the course. Even then, it is only 520 yards, and some will take it on with their second shot. The penultimate hole at Clyne is a short, downhill par 3, which plays a club less than its yardage. The closing hole takes golfers back to the clubhouse and has four greenside bunkers waiting for your final approach.  

Where is Clyne Golf Club located?  
Clyne Golf Club is in south Wales, just a few miles southwest of the city of Swansea. It sits at the entrance to the spectacular Gower Peninsula in an area of outstanding natural beauty. Blackpill SSSI (Site of Specific Scientific Interest) and Swansea Bay are just a mile to the east of Clyne. 

 

Swansea is the closest train station, which is just under five miles from Clyne Golf Club. Trains run east-west via Swansea, with London Paddington the furthest destination. Trains from Swansea also run further into west Wales, with Carmarthen and Pembroke Dock at the end of the line. Swansea Airport is just five miles from Clyne, but Cardiff Airport – the busiest airport in Wales – is 40 miles to the east and has plenty more flights running each day.

Along with the championship layout, Clyne also has a driving range and short game area to offer its guests and members. The range is between the 10th, 17th, and 18th holes, while the putting and chipping green are by the opening tee box.
