Lingfield Park | NCG Top 100s: GB&I Golf Resorts

Lingfield Park is perhaps better known for its horse racing than its golf. However, it is also home to a great golf course, which sits to the side of the racecourse, along with a hotel ran by Marriott. The 4-star accommodation also features a gym and spa, where guests can relax during their stay.

The golf course was designed by Harvey Jarrett and opened in 1987, 97 years after the racecourse opened at Lingfield Park. It is not the longest course - just shy of 6,500 yards from the tips – but there is plenty of danger involved, including the racetrack coming into play as an out of bounds feature on the penultimate hole. Bunkers, lakes, streams and tree-lined fairways are all in play throughout a round at Lingfield Park.

Obviously, the racecourse is a big attraction for the resort, with more than 50 horse racing meetings being held at the Surrey venue each year. Some of these are ‘Feature Days’, and the racing is accompanied by live music in the evening. There is also a gym and spa at the resort, allowing guests to work out or relax during their stay.

Marriott Hotels are the owners of the accommodation at the venue, one of several on the NCG Top 100s: GB&I Golf Resorts list where you find the Marriott branding. The 116-room building is a 4-star hotel and offers a wide range of rooms and suites. Guest Rooms come in three forms, while the Superior Guest Rooms have balconies for hotel guests to enjoy the views of either the racecourse or golf course.

Lingfield Park Overview | NCG Top 100s: GB&I Golf Resorts

Racecourse, Golf Course

Horse racing has been around at Lingfield Park since 1890. It took almost a century before the golf course was designed and constructed, with the Harvey Jarrett design opening in 1987. The two don’t always go hand in hand, but there are several layouts in the United Kingdom with successful links to racecourses, and Lingfield Park is one of them.

The Jarrett design measures almost 6,500 yards from the back tees and borders the racecourse at several points throughout a round. The track actually comes into play on the 17th, with the track being an out of bounds hazard on the left side of the penultimate hole. That is not the only hazard on the layout, with plenty of trees, bunkers and even a water hazard in play on the 15th. The difficulty of the course has led to the venue becoming a host of the PGA EuroPro Tour.

15 and 17 are among the signature holes on the golf course at Lingfield Park. The former is a tough par 5 measuring 540 yards. The last 200 of that is played uphill so it plays even longer than its carded distance. Seven bunkers, a lake, a stream and an oak tree in the middle of the fairway. Miss all of that, and you might make par or better on the 15th. The penultimate hole has the track running alongside it on its left side as an out of bounds feature. It is a short par 4 at just 345 yards, but if you are not accurate off the tee, then a par could be difficult.

Marriott Hotels

Lingfield Park is one of several venues on the NCG Top 100s: GB&I Golf Resorts list to come under the Marriott banner. The 4-star hotel, which features 116 rooms and suites, was opened in 2010 as the Lingfield Park Marriott Hotel and Country Club.

There are three types of Guest Rooms in the hotel, with the Guest Double being the standard offering. Guest King Rooms and Guest Family Rooms are also available, with the latter coming equipped with two double beds to fit the whole clan. Each of these options comes with Wi-Fi, TV, tea and coffee making facilities and an en-suite bathroom as standard.

The Marriott Hotel at Lingfield Park also has Superior Guest Rooms, which can come equipped with a king-sized bed or two double beds. These all have balconies, with views over either the racecourse or the golf course. The final piece to the puzzle is the option of renting out a One Bedroom Suite, which is the best of the best when it comes to accommodation at Lingfield Park.

Leisure & Activities

It might not surprise you that there is plenty to do during your stay at Lingfield Park. There is an indoor heated swimming pool and a whirlpool, along with a fitness suite which is fully equipped with high-tech cardio and resistance equipment, along with a wide array of free weights.

Of course, there is also the racecourse. Lingfield Park runs more than 50 meetings each year, with a range of action across the jumps, flat and all-weather tracks. There are feature days with live entertainment, where guests can enjoy the racing and then music in the evening.
