Course Information

The Chiberta experience is nothing if not different, and some visiting golfers will absolutely love it.

Located between Bayonne and Biarritz in Anglet, a fishing port with a swish marina, there is a distinctive feel to this well-heeled resort.

Arriving in the resort you feel like an extra in an Agatha Christie whodunnit based around the art deco Hotel du Chiberta, an elegant affair with the sort of pedigree feel you can’t buy.

Surrounding it there is everything from flashy cars to fleets of Vespas and grand fountains to a putting green in the roundabout!

There is a reason for al this retro glitz, because Chiberta was created in the ‘Roaring Twenties’ and has the Duke of Windsor involved.

After a shorter seaside section on the back the pines return for a very presentable closing section for this unmissable south-west France course.

It was he who asked the greatEnglish architect Tom Simpson to create a course here to entertain the great and good who visited Biarritz for weekends and holidays.

So it’s hard not to be already a little intrigued by Chiberta before you even set foot on its course.

Once there, you realise this is a mixture of tree-lined parkland with a stellar section next to the Atlantic Ocean.

That ocean scene seems unlikely as you begin the round with a hole near a busy road and among housing.

Nevertheless this opener is actually a very presentable start in isolation; an undulating journey among mature woodland.

Chiberta, laid out by Simpson in 1926, then shows its best face with holes towards and alongside the Atlantic before becoming a more serene experience among pines and alongside a lake to end and start the nines.

After a shorter seaside section on the back the pines return for a very presentable closing section for this unmissable south-west France course.

Indeed the closing quartet have as much if not more architectural merit than the more explosive seaside holes and secure Chiberta’s place in our Continental Top 100 ranking.

It isn’t up there with Simpson’s very finest work in France – and to be fair, nothing is – but Chiberta is elegant, intriguing and well worth adding to your wishlist. Chris Bertram
