St Pierre Country Club | NCG Top 100s: GB&I Golf Resorts

St Pierre Country Club is one of four Welsh venues to claim a place on the NCG Top 100s: GB&I Golf Resorts list, and it is also one of four resorts to have played host to the Solheim Cup. There are two golf courses, including the championship Old Course, along with Mathern Course. There is also a leisure club and spa, while the accommodation is run by Delta Hotels by Marriott.

Let’s talk golf. St Pierre has been a championship venue for more than five decades now. The Old Course first played host to the DP World Tour back in 1971, and it has gone on to host the British Masters on eight occasions. The Old was also the venue for the 1996 Solheim Cup, only the second edition of the tournament to be staged on European soil. There are extensive practice facilities at the resort, with a driving range and short game area, along with the opportunity to receive coaching and tuition.

Away from the golf course, the Leisure Club and Spa is the place to go for a workout or to relax. The gym at the Leisure Club is fully equipped with the latest equipment, with treadmills, free weights, and exercise bikes all on offer. A swimming pool, whirlpool, sauna, and steam room add to the relaxation choices, while the Beauty Rooms Spa offers massages, treatments, and beauty options, including manicures and pedicures.

Delta Hotels by Marriott are the providers of the accommodation at the St Pierre Country Club. The chain-run hotel offers six types of rooms and suites across their three main venues – the Main House, Courtyard and St Pierre Village. There are Deluxe Rooms which can come in double or twin form, along with Superior Rooms in the Village and Courtyard. The Courtyard Suites, St Pierre Village Suites and the Honeymoon Suites offer extensive luxury, with the latter being the best that St Pierre has to offer in terms of accommodation.

St Pierre Country Club Overview | NCG Top 100s: GB&I Golf Resorts

A Solheim Cup Venue

Like most venues on the NCG Top 100s: GB&I Golf Resorts list, St Pierre Country Club is home to two 18-hole golf courses. However, unlike most, the championship Old Course at the venue has played host to the Solheim Cup. Several other DP World Tour events have also been played at the venue. St Pierre’s Mathern Course is a great alternative to the Old Course.

The Old Course
The championship offering at St Pierre Country Club is the Old Course. The course was designed by CK Cotton in the 1960s, with Ross McMurray remodelling the layout in 2008. Measuring more than 7,000 yards, the par 72 layout has played host to several big golf tournaments. The Old Course was the second European venue to host the Solheim Cup, doing so after Dalmahoy in 1996.

St Pierre has also played host to the Curtis Cup, along with seeing the DP World Tour visit on 14 occasions. The Epson Grand Prix of Europe was played in six successive years from 1986 to 1991, while the British Masters was played at St Pierre on eight occasions between 1971 and 1983, with the likes of Ian Woosnam, Greg Norman, Bernard Gallacher and Tony Jacklin all being victorious at the Welsh venue.

The course itself is based on the western side of the resort and opens with the longest hole at 580 yards from the tips. There are a number of dog-legs on the Old Course, with the 10th turning to the left around a water hazard. The 15th and 17th both come face-to-face with that same water hazard, with the water looming around three sides of each green. The Old Course closes with a long par 3, over 230 yards from the tips. It plays over water and with the buildings in close order behind the green.

The Mathern Course
St Pierre’s second golf offering is the Mathern Course, which Ross McMurray also remodelled in 2008, at the same time as he did the Old Course. Sitting on the east side of the resort, the Mathern is a much shorter track than the Old, coming in at less than 5,800 yards. As a Par 68, though, it can still cause one or two issues for players of all abilities.

It opens with a drivable par 4 at just 250 yards from the tips, but the 2nd is one of two par 3s on the course measuring more than 200 yards. The other is the 8th, which plays at 220 yards and plays directly opposite the 2nd. The 4th is the only par 5 on the layout and cross a running stream on two occasions, first off the tee and then on the second shot. Like the Old Course, the Mathern also finishes with a par 3. The 18th plays to a green with three bunkers surrounding it, and the resort as the backdrop.
