Anglesey Golf Club is the only true links course in the Welsh island of Anglesey, and offers its golfers stunning views of the Irish Sea and Llyn Peninsula. 

 

With Snowdonia as a backdrop, the course was opened in 1914. Designed by Harold Hinton, twice an Open Champion, the course had to be redesigned following the Second World War, after 14 holes were lost. 

 

Today, the course plays more than 6,300 yards, and features, plenty of dunes, heathland, gorse and even the River Crigyll at times.

Anglesey Golf Club has now been around for more than a century, dating back to its opening in 1914. Harold Horsfall Hilton – a two-time winner of the Open Championship – was the man to design the original 18-hole layout.  

 

The 1920s saw an important man in the world of golf join the club. Dr Frank Stableford – the man whose scoring system is named after him – was a member at Anglesey for almost a decade.  

 

Like a lot of courses, the Second World War ravaged Anglesey. 14 of the original 18 holes were lost, but they were quickly replaced with a new layout, along with a brand new clubhouse.  

Anglesey Golf Club lays claim to being the only links course on the island of Anglesey. Thanks to its sandy soil, the course is playable year-round, with the layout running between the dunes and heathland of the region. The backdrop of Snowdonia and Llyn Peninsula across the water make for some stunning scenery, while the Crigyll River comes into play on the final hole. 

 

The course is a Par 70 layout, which measures just over 6,300 yards, and if there is the added difficulty of a sea breeze, then it makes for a difficult prospect. The opening hole is a par 3 of 200 yards, and is no gentle beginning. Four par 4s follow, all between 360 and 380 yards, with golfers crossing underneath the railway between the 3rd green and the 4th tee.  

 

The 6th is a 170-yard par 3 and the easiest hole on the course, before the short par 5 7th which could yield birdie and eagle opportunities if played right. It is only 485 yards long, meaning most will be able to have a go at reaching in two. As you get to the far side of the course, around the turn, Trewan Sands Caravan Park comes into view, with the 9th hole playing across the other side of the road before you make the turn for home.  

 

The first three holes of the back nine are all par 4s, and all less than 400 yards from the back tees. From there, the tough closing stretch begins. 13 is a par 3 measuring 195 yards, before the 14th and 15th are long par 4s. 14 is the hardest hole on the course, while 15 is 420 yards long, with a semi-blind tee shot. There is some respite at the short 16th and the par 5 17th before you get to the tough final hole at Anglesey. After crossing back underneath the train tracks, the 18th plays with Crigyll River down its right side off the tee. The water then cuts across in front of the green, making the final approach shot a treacherous one. Get over the water, and the job is almost done! 

Where is Anglesey Golf Club located?  
Anglesey Golf Club is on the Welsh island of Anglesey. It sits on the southwestern side of the island, looking out over the Irish Sea. Rhosneigr is the nearest town to the golf club, with the club sitting directly off the A4080 – which runs from Menai Bridge to the connection with the A55. 

 

Rhosneigr is also home to the nearest train station to Anglesey Golf Club. The station is less than half a mile from the station, which runs trains from Holyhead on the western side of the island. Trains run through to Shrewsbury and Manchester Airport, with occasional services to Crewe running as well. 

 

Like most of north Wales and Anglesey, the nearest major airports are both across the border in England. Both Liverpool John Lennon Airport and Manchester Airport are within a two-hour drive from Anglesey Golf Club, with the latter being the busiest airport in the United Kingdom outside the city of London.  

What golf facilities does Anglesey Golf Club offer?  
Along with the 18-hole golf course, Anglesey Golf Club is also home to a practice area. There is a mid-range driving range to the side of the 18th hole, on the opposite side of the Crigyll. The putting green is by the clubhouse before you take the walk down to the first tee.
