A round at Aberystwyth Golf Club treats golfers to stunning views of the Welsh coastline and the Irish Sea, along with the backdrop of Snowdonia. 

 

Six-time Open Champion Harry Vardon designed the 18-hole layout at Aberystwyth, with the course opening shortly before the First World War. 

 

Since then, the course has been extended, with trees planted and bunkers added to make it into a true test for golfers of all abilities.

Aberystwyth Golf Club was founded in 1911. Harry Vardon – six-time winner of the Open Championship – was the man to design the 18-hole layout.  

 

The course opened two years later, as a 5,200-yard layout. Five decades later, the course was extended slightly and brought down to a Par 66. 

 

Over the next few decades, the course was fully extended to more than 6,100 yards, with bunkers and trees added to turn it into the test that it is today.  

Aberystwyth Golf Club affords some spectacular and unparalleled views across Cardigan Bay. Designed by the legendary six-time Open champion Harry Vardon, the course has stood the test of time. The 6,119-yard par-70 course plays out over undulating ground and the first three holes especially are quite a climb and represent a tough start to the round. 

  

The opening hole is one of the tougher holes on the course, playing more than 430 yards. It takes 220 yards to reach the brow of the hill, before a long approach down to the green. Add in out of bounds down the right side and it's a great par to start. If that wasn’t difficult enough, then the 2nd hole is the hardest on the card. Out of bounds is on the right again and comes in down the left side nearer the green. An undulating green at the end continues the treacherous start. 

 

There is the chance to get back on track at the short 3rd, which is only 240 yards long. This par 4 features out of bounds long and right but offers views of Snowdonia from the green. The next three holes are all par 4s, with the toughest of those coming at the 6th. It is 420 yards long, but has a wide fairway at the landing zone, setting you up for a long approach. 7 is the longest par 3 on the property, measuring 220 yards. It plays from an elevated tee and there is plenty of trouble around. 

 

8 plays across the corner of the boundary of the property, but could be driven by longer hitters at just 310 yards, while the front nine ends with another par 3. The back nine starts with the first two par 5s you will find at Aberystwyth, and the 10th features a large water feature in front of the green. It is a double dog-leg par 5, moving right first before then turning left to the green. The 11th is in the same vein, right then left, but is slightly shorter than the 10th. 12 is a 457-yard par 4, and one of the toughest holes on the course. Playing uphill, it plays longer than its yardage, before the par 3 13th then comes back down the slope. 

 

14 is another short par 4 that could be drivable depending on the wind direction. 15 is then a short par 5 at 505 yards. With a wide fairway in the landing zone, this is a hole that can be reached by the longer hitters in two. The 16th is the shortest par 3 at just 130 yards, but there are no trees, so you are at the mercy of the wind. The penultimate hole is a short par 4, before the closing par 3 to finish your round at Aberystwyth. A downhill par 3 with plenty of trees and sand around the green, it is a tough finishing hole.

Aberystwyth Golf Club is in Mid-Wales and the venue is situated on the very western coastline of the country, with the town of Aberystwyth less than a mile south. The A487 runs past the golf club, with the road running from Haverfordwest to Bangor, while the A44 ends in Aberystwyth, having begun almost 200 miles to the east in Oxford. 

 

Aberystwyth Station is in the town centre, and within a mile of the entrance to the golf club. Trains from the station run to Birmingham, Shrewsbury and Machynlleth. For international travellers to the United Kingdom, Aberystwyth is around three hours from any major airport – Birmingham International, Cardiff, Liverpool John Lennon and Manchester are all around that timeframe from the golf club.

There is no driving range at Aberystwyth Golf Club, but the club does have a short game area to allow golfers to hone their skills before taking to the course.
