Abersoch Golf Club, found on the beautiful Llyn Peninsula and running adjacent to Machroes Beach, has been around for well over a century. 

 

The golf club was founded in 1907, on Boxing Day to be precise, with six-time Open Champion Harry Vardon being the man to lay the course out among the dunes.  

 

The course has both links holes and parkland holes and is at the mercy of the conditions. It is less than 6,000 yards, but as a Par 69, there are tests along the way.

Abersoch Golf Club is one of several courses on the NCG Top 100s: Wales list to have been founded well over a century ago. 

 

The founding date of the club was Boxing Day in 1907. The great Harry Vardon – a six-time winner of the Open Championship – was the man to design the course, with parts of it forged through the dunescape of the region.  

 

The course has remained relatively unchanged over the rest of its 115-year history. 

Thanks to its location on the beautiful Llyn Peninsula in North Wales, Abersoch is known as "a jewel on the Welsh Riviera". Traditional links holes hugging the coastline - contoured over 100 years ago through huge natural sand dunes - testing parkland holes to finish and the weather conditions always playing a part, Abersoch has a little bit of everything. Vardon’s design has remained relatively unchanged, and the course now plays as a Par 69, measuring just shy of 5,900 yards.  

 

The course begins with a gentle opening hole, one of 377 yards, before the first of just two par 5s on the Par 69 layout. The 2nd is only 470 yards, but a water feature before the fairway and a stream running across the fairway further down mean that golfers must plot their way down this hole. The 3rd is the signature hole at Abersoch. It is a 246-yard par 3, with an elevated tee box offering panoramic views of the region. Accuracy is key, with gorse, water and sand all in play on this par 3. 

 

Get through the 3rd unscathed and you are rewarded with a birdie opportunity at the 4th. It is a short par 4, less than 290 yards, and can be played in a number of different ways. The 5th is the last par 5 at Abersoch and the longest hole on the course, but it is only 506 yards. It is the first hole playing next to the sand dunes and Machroes Beach, bringing the weather conditions very much into play. 6 is a short par 3 playing towards the sea, with the 7th then being the hardest hole at Abersoch. The 450-yard par 4 plays with the beach on its right, and depending on the wind direction, it could feel much longer.  

 

The 8th and 9th are the last two holes to play along the coastline, with the layout moving inland after the turn. Both of those holes, along with the 10th, are short par 4s, all less than 360 yards. 11 is then the second and final par 4 of more than 400 yards, and the hardest hole on the back nine. It is followed by the easiest hole at Abersoch, though, with the 12th being a 319-yard par 4, and drivable depending on the wind conditions.  

 

The parkland section begins with the 13th, a tricky par 4 with two streams running across the hole, one of those in front of the green. There are three par 3s in the final five holes, coming at 14, 16 and 18. All of them are between 160 and 170 yards long, each with multiple bunkers greenside. The closing hole is back on the links side of the course, with a water hazard that runs down the left side, and two greenside bunkers on the right.  

Where is Abersoch Golf Club located?  
Abersoch Golf Club is one of the westernmost courses in Wales, sitting on the coast of the Llyn Peninsula. The course overlooks Machroes Beach and Abersoch Beach, and out to the water. Saint Tudwal Chapel is in view on Ynys Tudwal Fach. Pwllheli is around seven miles down the coastline.  

 

Pwllheli is also the home to the closest railway station to Abersoch Golf Club. The station is the final stop on the line, with trains running from Pwllheli to Shrewsbury, with stops in Aberystwyth, Welshpool, and Borth – so you can get to other venues on the NCG Top 100s: Wales list. Both Liverpool John Lennon Airport and Manchester Airport are around 120 miles from Abersoch Golf Club, and just over a two-hour driver, traffic dependent. The latter of the two is the busiest airport in the United Kingdom not to be based in London.

There are no outdoor facilities at Abersoch Golf Club, due to the course’s location and its close nature with the beach and sea. However, there is an indoor simulator that can be used by both guests and members.

The price of a green fee at Abersoch Golf Club changes throughout the year, depending on the season. It is also different depending on whether it is a weekday or weekend.
