Abama Overview | NCG Top 100s: European Golf Resorts

Abama Golf Course

The championship golf course at Abama was designed by former Ryder Cup player Dave Thomas, and it is acclaimed as one of the best places to play golf in all of Spain, not just the Canary Islands.

Due to its location, the course rises up the west face of El Teide, the volcano that is situated in the middle of Tenerife. More than 300 species of plant life, including over 20,000 palm trees, are on the Abama resort, with the 18-hole championship lay-out winding its way through the natural terrain.

There are also 22 lakes spread throughout the course, as well as waterfalls. This makes the course challenging to golfers of all levels.

That water first comes into play on the 3rd tee shots, with a pair of lakes situated to the left of the fairway, before playing over another lake on the par-3 4th hole. The water really challenges you at Abama during the back nine of the round, with it running all the way down the left side on 10. 12 and 14 are both par-3s with water in play, the latter almost being an island green.

Abama closes with a long par-4, with a narrow stream running in front of the green. A par is a great result before visiting the clubhouse for a well-earned drink.

Abama Golf Academy

The Abama Golf Academy’s facilities are world class. There is a driving range, along with a short game area to allow players to practice their chipping and putting skills. Not only that, but the Golf Academy at Abama is also the home to three short par-3s for less experienced golfers to try their hand on before getting out onto the championship course.

For players new to the game, Abama has a Beginner’s Course. The Academy supplies all the equipment and aims to make learning the fundamentals of the game fun for all ages. Guests learn about all aspects of the game, including rules and etiquette before taking to the Par-3 course.

For those more experienced with the game of golf, there is private instruction at the Academy. Both range and on course lessons are available. The Abama Golf Academy also provides intensive 3 and 5 day Academy courses, to really fine tune the game and to improve skills before heading out onto the course.
