It turns out Rory McIlroy is a fan of The Slam. Kind of. Maybe. Probably not. Alex Perry explains all in this week’s edition
Hello. Welcome to this week’s edition of The Slam, National Club Golfer’s look back on the golfing week.
First up, you may have noticed Sergio Garcia didn’t play in either the BMW PGA Championship or Fort Worth Invitational last weekend.
That’s because he was in Kiev to watch his beloved Real Madrid beat Liverpool 3-1 in the Champions League final.
Nothing really to say about this, it was really just bring up the fact Liverpool lost.
Slam fan Rory
Rory McIlroy said ahead of this week’s Memorial that he doesn’t get why the PGA Tour groups the best players together for the opening rounds of an event.
He said: “I don’t mind playing with the top guys in the first two days, but the objective is to get those top guys in contention on Sunday.”
He added: “I get why they’re doing it, and I get why it creates a bit of a buzz at the start of the week. But I would rather see Rickie and Phil and Tiger play on a Sunday rather than on a Thursday and two of them going home.”
Hang on, haven’t we heard this before?
A plea to the PGA Tour from @AlexPerryNCG: It's time to stop the marquee groups.

Nice to know Rory is an avid viewer of The Slam…
World No. 1 merry-go-round
And finally I love this story from the US where Justin Thomas admitted he stayed up all night refreshing the Official World Golf Rankings website to see his name apppear as World No. 1.
While we’re on the subject, Justin Rose’s win at Colonial on Sunday means he is the closest to World No. 1 he’s ever been and has a chance to reach the summit at the Memorial.
But so do Jordan Spieth and Dustin Johnson.
In short: No one knows who will be World No. 1 come Monday – but we’re in for a hell of a ride to find out.

About the Slam
Founded in 2017 in a tiny green room in Leeds, The Slam, presented by Alex Perry, is National Club Golfer’s irreverent look back on the biggest news of the week from the golfing world.
It has since received rave reviews from the critics:
“This guy is nowhere near as funny as he thinks he is” – Facebook
“I wish he would get his hair cut” – YouTube
“WTF” – Twitter
“I heard him say Tiger Woods. Did he criticise Tiger Woods?” – Tiger Woods fans
“You look very handsome and I’m ever so proud” – Alex’s mum
If you’d like more musings from Alex’s little world, you can follow him on Twitter. Or don’t, that’s up to you. Probably best you don’t.
