Here’s why you want Rory to win the PGA Championship

Equipment editor Hannah Holden rounds up the week's gear news, including an interesting tactic from Rory McIlroy's friends at TaylorMade

I’ll get to Rory McIlroy in a moment, but first it’s been an interesting week.

I have been away at Royal Troon competing in the Scottish Women’s Open Amateur Championship (blog coming soon), and while I was there got to test out the new Garmin Approach G80 (review coming soon), and I also went down to play the stunning Luffenham Heath (Played by NCG coming soon) and check out the new Ecco shoes that I’m not allowed to tell you about just yet (that one I can tell you about).

In the meantime, let’s take a look at some of the equipment news that has caught my attention since I returned from Scotland…

Why fans will be backing Rory McIlroy at Bethpage

TaylorMade have teamed up with Golf Galaxy and Dick’s Sporting Goods for a promotion ahead of the PGA Championship next month that will catch everyone’s eye.

Anyone who purchases a TaylorMade M5 or M6 between now and May 15 will be reimbursed the full cost should McIlroy go ahead and win his third Wanamaker Trophy.

McIlroy hasn’t won a major since the PGA Championship in 2014 but has shown stellar form in recent months to lock up numerous top 10s and a win at the Players.

Xtreme putters

PXG have launched a new line of putters with 100% solid milled construction. The line features eight new head options with a variable-sized pyramid pattern on the putter face.

A key feature of this range is that each putter is available in three different shaft options. This is really important in ensuring you get the right putter for your stroke, as they affect whether the putter is face balanced or has toe hang.

Looking forward to getting my hands on these.

More information is available on the PXG website.

Ping team up with Arccos

Ping will now offer Arccos Smart Grip and Smart Sensor technology on all Ping golf clubs, providing they are purchased throughout the custom-fit process.

Once connected to your phone the sensors track shot data throughout your round to provide you with on course ‘caddie advice’ and post round analysis.

Ping president John Solheim said:

With our long-time focus on data collection and the ability to improve product performance and custom-fitting techniques through expert analysis of a golfer’s tendencies on the golf course, it’s a tremendous opportunity for us to join with Arccos to help bring more visibility to the benefits of playing ‘smart’ golf.

More information is available on the Ping website.

Watch out for my review of the new Arccos caddie smart sensors coming soon on NCG…
