Ecco S-Three review: The shoe choice of a major champion
Ecco have two headline models for 2021. I will take care of the Ecco S-Three review here, while my colleague Hannah Holden has taken care of the Biom H4.
Ecco S-Three review: First impressions
If the S-Three shoes are good enough for Henrik Stenson then they are certainly good enough for me. I’d been looking forward to trying out a pair ever since I first saw some pictures back at the start of the year.
I wasn’t disappointed – they look great. Compared to many previous Ecco models, what you see when you are wearing the shoes is simpler and more minimalistic.
My samples are white and grey but there are more adventurous colour combinations available as well.
It’s rare to find a shoe that offers instant comfort but also a snug fit – the S-Threes did just that from the get-go.
Ecco S-Three review: The tech
It’s a three-pronged attack from Ecco – hence the name – as the performance distinction between spiked and spikeless shoes becomes ever smaller. Comfort, Stability and Flexibility are the stated aims.
The heel is engineered for comfort, the firmer middle section promotes lateral stability and the front of the midsole is incredibly pliable to help you move freely.
That’s a powerful combination.
Ecco S-Three review: NCG verdict
At £180, the S-Three is unashamedly positioned towards the top of the market and it’s a fair chunk to invest in a pair of golf shoes. Plenty of discerning golfers, though, will differentiate between cost and value.
For a start, this is a shoe you can get plenty of use from off the course as well as on it. And while Ecco are explicitly talking up the comfort, stability and flexibility of the S-Three here, the truth is that their shoes have excelled in all three categories for years – especially the Biom Hybrid series.
I would add to that the key benefit of longevity. You can wear Ecco shoes for years and they continue to perform like they did when new even when they no longer look new. That’s pretty rare for a golf shoe in my experience and it’s what makes them worth the investment. Ecco’s golf shoes may be expensive, comparatively speaking, but they also offer excellent value.
- RRP: £180 (men’s); £170 (women’s)
