Rockliffe Hall is a five-star hotel, leisure destination and course in the Tees Valley just outside Darlington.

Owned by Middlesbrough FC chairman Steve Gibson, Rockliffe is also home to the Championship club’s training facilities.

The brand-new course stretches to over 7,500 yards and was clearly designed with professional, tournament golf in mind.

As you would expect, water is a recurring feature and in play on at least half the holes. Presented in immaculate condition, the greens are undulating and quick while a few of the bunkers are sneakily deep.

Off the tips it is certainly a long way round but choose the right set of tees for your ability and you will have a testing but manageable day.

The accent here is very much on being looked after so when you come off the last green your clubs will be whisked away by staff and cleaned.

In the meantime, you can take advantage of the stylish clubhouse, where everything from snacks to three-course meals are served. And you can enjoy some great food plus golf deals for under £200.

Top Holes by Dan Murphy, editor:

4th 489 yards, par 4

The back tees here add another 60 yards so you are likely to play this at more like 430. The fairway curves right around a lake so you can either play safe or try to cut the corner.

17th 406 yards, par 4

This blends beautifully into the surroundings and can also be played in two ways. Play short and right away from the water and sand for safety but a tough second, or take an aggressive line to leave a clear view and just a wedge in.
