Cleveland is a stunning North Yorkshire links that will this year celebrate its 125th anniversary.

This makes it the oldest course in the county and a true championship links, having hosted the English Golf Union County Finals and the Yorkshire County Team Championship among others.

During the club’s long history it is known that a few architects have had involvement in the design of the course. The most famous of these were Harry Colt and Donald Steel; the latter designed three new holes in 2000.

The links track is situated on the beautiful North East coastline and comes in at a 6,921 yards with a par of 72 from the back tees.

The course itself is flat and easy to walk and, as you might expect, the challenge comes when the wind blows.

The sand dunes, which are reminiscent of the New Course at St Andrews, only help in adding to the scenic drama at Cleveland.

You must also try and avoid the many strategically-placed sand traps, both on the fairways and around the greens, if you are to score well.

The holes are not disappointing either; from the moment you step onto the tee of the opening 168-yard par-3 you know you are in for a challenge.

The sole disappointment comes in the looming nearby steelworks, which is the only real factor that stops Cleveland being ranked alongside the country’s finest links.

Having said that, this helps it remain cheap to play – at under £30-a-round – and, as a result, it is one of the best bargains in England.
