Course stats: Par 71; 7,261 yards
Course summary: This desert track is relatively short with undulating Bermuda fairways and large, fast Bermuda greens. Deep bunkering and water hazards are the main defence for this course where consistent ball strikers appear to prosper. The course sits at altitude, so players will have to factor this in when calculating their shots. An exciting closing stretch features a reachable par-5, and a driveable par-4, with danger from water hazards lurking throughout.

Bazza’s Banker: Jordan Spieth – 2.5pt e/w @ 20/1 with Bet365
Spieth was sensational last weekend, and despite not winning the event, I couldn’t help but make a mental note for him this week. Spieth has some good form at the Phoenix Open – if you ignore that period where he didn’t play well anywhere – with three top-10 finishes to his name.
Spieth ranked 1st for SG: Tee-to-green at Pebble, and I am conscious that when he gets hot it is really hard to stop him. Three top-21 finishes prior to his 2nd place last week suggest he is gearing up to find his best stuff, and I could not deal with the FOMO if I am not on him when he wins this week.
The Each-Way Play: Bubba Watson – 1.5pt e/w @ 40/1 with Bet365
How can I not include the two-time Masters champion after that near miss in Saudi Arabia last week? That performance was vintage Bubba, and his form here suggests we can expect him to carry some of that over to Phoenix. His last three visits to TPC Scottsdale have yielded two top-5 finishes and a top-25.
Last season, Watson ranked 9th for SG: Off-the-tee, so certainly fits the bill of a top quality ball striker. A long break may have been just what he needed to recharge the batteries, and with a strong performance still fresh in his memory he could be dangerous at this price.
The Longshot: Corey Conners – 1pt e/w @ 60/1 with Bet365
Conners has had an up and down start to the campaign with three finishes inside the top-22 among a couple of missed cuts. The Canadian has progressively improving form at this venue, having finished 45th in 2020 and 17th in 2021. That is encouraging, especially when you consider how well he suits this tough course statistically.
Conners currently ranks 9th for SG: Tee-to-green and 2nd for SG: Approach in the last three months, and typically plays well on courses that require solid ball striking. Despite having just one PGA Tour win to his name, Conners has demonstrated he can mix it with the best on occasion and I fancy him to have a good week in Phoenix at a decent price.
