We’re now well into the PGA Tour winter break but there is always room to squeeze in a Tiger Woods-hosted knockabout in the Bahamas. Let’s take a look at the tournament details before getting to my Hero World Challenge betting tips…
Venue: Albany Golf Club, Bahamas
Date: December 4-6, 2019
Course stats: Par-72, 7,309 yards
Course summary: The Ernie Els designed layout doesn’t really suit a particular kind of golfer with shorter hitters and long hitters both having success here in the past.
Purse: $1 million
Defending champion: Jon Rahm (-20)
Hero World Challenge betting tips and preview: Who will win?
The Spaniard was seriously impressive on his return to action in Dubai, particularly when considering he’d taken the best part of two months off.
He won comfortably here last year – four shots better than Tony Finau who claimed solo second place – and it would be no surprise to see him repeat that.
He’s a short enough price but you’ll struggle to argue a stronger case for any of the other 17 players in the field. An outright win bet is the play here.
Jordan Spieth (28/1) may not be in the finest form of his life but this is a course where putting can make the difference.
Not so long ago Spieth was hailed as the best putter on tour and we’ve seen plenty of flashes reflecting that in recent times but consistency has let him down.
At that price he’s a juicy price for a place in such a small field and with a tied 3rd on his last appearance here in 2017, he knows his way around.
Hero World Challenge betting tips and preview: Special bet
Bet365 are offering group betting in which you can select a player from a group of five to finish highest.
Group B contains Rickie Fowler, Justin Rose, Webb Simpson, Patrick Reed and Gary Woodland (4/1) and it is with the latter that I think the value lies.
At 4/1 I think Woodland is a good bet to top these five. He finished 8th here last year in his first outing and has shown signs of a return to form at the beginning of the PGA Tour season.
He finished third in Korea at the CJ Cup at fifth at the Zozo Championship so I’m backing him to see off this selection of opponents.
