It has been nearly two years since the 716 irons were launched with the new product expected to be unveiled later this autumn.

The Titleist fitting team took the new 718 irons – of which there are six models – to TPC Potomac ahead of the Quicken Loans National tournament where tour players such as Justin Thomas, Ben An, Bill Haas, Jimmy Walker and Robert Streb had the chance to test and get dialled in.

The MBs are popular with Adam Scott, Thomas, An and Walker whereas we should expect to see the likes of Jordan Spieth, Kevin Na, and Jason Dufner switching into the AP2s.

New 718 irons are also being seeded on the European Tour at the HNA Open de France where staff players such as Ian Poulter, Bernd Wiesberger, Thongchai Jaidee and Andrew ‘Beef’ Johnston will be working closely with tour reps and members of the R&D team.

From the images that were released on social media we can see that there is a new model from the 716 launch and they are the Titleist 718 Ap3 irons.
There’s still AP1, AP2, CB, MB and the utility TMB irons. So where do we think AP3 will sit within the 718 range?
Well it still looks like the AP1 is the largest model so the AP3 should sit between that and the forged AP2 which is one of the most popular models on tour.
Some are saying it looks a bit like a non-forged version of the AP2 but it definitley isn’t as sleek and seems to have more perimeter weighting.
Ian Poulter posted on social media that he’ll be using the new AP2 irons but with an AP3 4-iron in the bag. This suggests that the AP3 is a larger more forgiving iron.
All will be revealed in the coming weeks but it looks like the AP1 may have moved to more of a ‘super game-improvement’ iron with the AP3 aimed more at the mid-handicappers.
Watch this space…
