Woods pleads guilty to reckless driving

Tiger Woods will serve 12 months' probation after pleading guilty to reckless driving

Tiger Woods pleaded guilty at his hearing for reckless driving and agreed to enter a diversion program for first-time offenders.

It means the 14-time major champion will avoid a conviction. He accepted the conditions of the program, for which he is eligible as he has no previous criminal record.

The program involves 12 months of probation. Woods has already served 50 hours of community service.

During the sentencing, Judge Bosso-Pardo told Woods: “This particular plea agreement has no jail time.

“However, if you violate your probation in any significant way, I could revoke your probation and sentence you to jail for 90 days. Is that understood?”

Woods replied: “Yes.”

If Woods completes the program with no further convictions, his record will be wiped clean.

Tiger Woods arrest timeline:

August 15: Five drugs found in Woods system

Woods had five drugs in his system at the time of his DUI test in May.

A urine test revealed the 14 time major champion had strong painkillers, sleep and anxiety drugs and THC, a component of marijuana.

The results from Woods’ toxicology report were made public by the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office and revealed Tiger had the following drugs in his system:

  • Hydrocodone (Vicodin)
  • Hydromorphone (Dilaudid)
  • Alprazolam (Xanax)
  • Zolpidem (Ambien)
  • Delta-9 carboxy THC

“As I previously said, I received professional help to manage my medications,” Woods said on Monday.

“Recently, I had been trying on my own to treat my back pain and a sleep disorder, including insomnia, but I realise now it was a mistake to do this without medical assistance.”

August 9: Woods pleads not guilty

Tiger Woods enters a plea of not guilty in relation to his arrest for DUI in Florida in May.

Woods, who didn’t attend the hearing at Palm Beach County, will begin a diversion programme in October that could see the charge dropped from his record as part of any deal.

Instead of the DUI conviction he will accept a reckless driving plea which would allow him to complete community service, DUI school and a substance abuse evaluation.

If the programme is completed he would avoid any DUI charge.

July 3: Tiger talks

Tiger releases the below statement through his Twitter account revealing he has completed an “out of state private intensive program”:

June 27: Woods’ return to golf is ‘very hard’

Jack Nicklaus has waded into the Tiger issue, telling USA Today at a charity golf event that Woods has “more life problems than they are golf problems right now.”

Nicklaus added: “I don’t know whether Tiger will play much golf anymore. He’ll have a very hard time.”

The 18-time major champion said he hopes Woods gets his life “straightened out” before adding: “Whether he plays golf or not, I think he’s got an awful lot to offer the youth of the country and the game itself.

“Tiger’s a good kid, he cares about people. We’ll just see what happens.”

June 26: Quicken Loans no-go

Tiger will not be at TPC Potomac in Maryland for this week’s Quicken Loans National, an event that he has hosted since 2007 and benefits his foundation.

“As Tiger said, he is receiving ongoing professional help,” said Rick Singer, chief executive of Woods’ foundation. “Because of that, he cannot attend this year’s Quicken Loans National

“Tiger will stay in touch with the tournament and receive regular updates during the week.”

Woods has been host of the tournament since its inception in 2007. He’s a two-time winner of the event, although this is the third time in five years that he’s missed the competition. Woods also missed the Genesis Open, the other PGA Tour event attached to his name, earlier this year due to back pain.

June 22: Big names rally round

There’s a cracking field at this week’s Travelers Championship – and they have inevitably been asked about Tiger Woods. Here’s a select few…

Rory McIlroy: “It’s a tough one. I reached out to him when everything broke a few weeks ago just making sure he’s OK. I feel like I have built a good relationship with Tiger over the last few years. He’s been through a rough time the last few years with injuries and not being able to sleep. I totally understand how that can happen, so it’s good that he’s getting help. It’s good that he’s on the road to recover, and everyone in golf and around the world just wishes him the best.”

Jason Day: I just want his mind and his health to be where it should be,” Jason Day added. “I’m hoping he has a lot of good solid people around him that will look after him.”

Jordan Spieth: “I think we all want him to do what’s best for him.”

And Ryder Cup captain Jim Furyk added: “I think my first and foremost I want Tiger to be happy, I want him to be healthy. As we get older in this game, golf is so far down the list on what’s important in life. You want your health first. You want to be a happy person. He’s got two beautiful kids and I wish him the best. If he has an opportunity to come back in the future and play the game, great. If not, he accomplished pretty much more than anyone in the history of the game did anyway.”

Day also noted that Woods had been in touch with him regarding his poor showing at the US Open: “I text him every now and then. He texted me after I shot 79 and said, ‘Hey before you work on anything call me because I saw something. I was like ‘Yeah, you saw 79 shots,’ so I didn’t call him because I was so angry.”

June 20: Woods tweets update

Rumours circulated in celebrity gossip magazines last week that Woods was in rehab to get over an “addiction” to painkillers. It was reported he was doing it in order to keep the 50% custody agreement of his children.

But while nothing came from Tiger’s camp at the time, he has now posted an update on Twitter.

“I’m currently receiving professional help to manage my medications and the ways that I deal with back pain and a sleep disorder,” he wrote.

“I want to thank everyone for the amazing outpouring of support and understanding, especially the fans and players on tour.”

June 1: Martin Kaymer posts message of support

Martin Kaymer has taken to Twitter to post a video with his thoughts on Tiger’s current situation. In the two minute clip posted by the German asks for the golfing world to posts messages of support to help the former world No. 1.

June 1: Dashcam footage starts to leak to the media

Whether you agree with the release of the footage or not, it’s there for all to see. And it’s OK to watch it. It won’t make you a bad person. But if you don’t want to, that’s fine too. But as a news outlet, it’s our duty to keep you up to date on what is, frustratingly, the biggest “golf news” of the year so far.

May 31, 10.02pm: Photos emerge from Tiger’s arrest…

May 31: You’ll never guess who has some advice for Tiger…

“Call a friend,” John Daly told TMZ.

“Call Uber, carry transportation with the Tour. They have been so good with us that anybody can come and pick you up.

“Tiger probably didn’t think he was feeling that bad. I feel bad for the guy, he’s going through all of these surgeries and I am not saying because he’s an athlete he should get away with it.

“He just needs to get back on the golf course. This stuff will pass, it always does. It proves he’s human and one of us, baby. I love him.”

May 31: Was the car damaged?

Reports in the British press on Wednesday suggest Woods’ car had two flat tyres and a tail light out when police found him. There was also fresh damage to the front driver-side bumper.

May 30: Jack Nicklaus speaks out

“I’m a fan of Tiger’s. I’m a friend of Tiger’s. And I feel bad for him,” Nicklaus said ahead of the Memorial at Muirfield Village, a tournament which he hosts. “I think that he’s struggling. And I wish him well. I hope he gets out of it and I hope he plays golf again.

“He needs a lot of support from a lot of people. And I’ll be one of them.”

May 30: Jupiter PD test report released

And it doesn’t make good reading…

May 30: Arresting officer’s affidavit released

“Woods stated he was coming from Los Angeles from golfing,” wrote Officer Fandrey of the Jupiter Police Department. “Woods stated that he did not know where he was. Woods asked how far from his house he was.” Officer Fandrey also notes that Woods “takes several prescriptions”.

Woods’ speech is noted as “extremely slow and slurred, mumbled, confused”, while his attitude is described as “co-operative, confused”.

Woods was asked to complete some standard roadside tasks. For the ‘Walk & Turn’ part, Officer Fandrey noted that Woods “could not maintain [his] starting position” and that he “missed heel to toe each time”, “stepped off line several times”, and “used arms for balance”.

When asked to to stand on one leg, Woods “did not raise [his] foot off the ground six inches” and “placed [his] foot on the ground several times”.

When asked to touch his nose with his finger, Officer Fandrey said he explained “multiple times” to Woods, who did not carry out the task.

Finally, Woods was asked to recite the alphabet backwards. Officer Fandrey wrote: “When asked if he understood directions, he stated ‘Yes, recite entire national anthem backwards’. After several times of explaining instructions, he completed the task correctly.”

But, most importantly, Woods’ breathalyser test returned 0.00, meaning there was no alcohol in his system at the time of his arrest.

May 30: Woods was “asleep at the wheel”

Woods was asleep at the wheel of his car and had to be woken up by police before his DUI arrest, according to court reports obtained by several newspapers in the US.

The reports say police spotted Woods’ 2015 Mercedes stopped in the right-hand lane of Indian Creek Parkway near his home in Jupiter, Florida. The car’s engine was running, while the brake lights and right indicator were also on.

Woods’ arraignment hearing has been set for July 5

May 30: Woods insists alcohol was “not involved”

The former world No. 1 says it was due to “an unexpected reaction to prescribed medication”.

He added: “I understand the severity of what I did and I take full responsibility for my actions.

“I want the public to know that alcohol was not involved. I didn’t realise the mix of medications had affected me so strongly.

“I would like to apologise with all my heart to my family, friends and the fans. I expect more from myself too.”

May 29: News of Woods’ arrest begins to leak

Tiger Woods arrest

The former world No. 1 was taken into custody at Palm Beach County jail near his home in Jupiter, Florida, at around 3am local time. He was released eight hours later.

Woods’ police mugshot, in which he was looking dishevelled and unshaven, was quick to do the rounds on social media.

Woods recently revealed he was feeling “better than ever” following another stint under the knife to fix his prolonged back problems.
