Weekend winners: Wang makes it three, history for Rahm makes history

Jeunghun Wang has played in just 29 events on the European Tour and he now has three wins, and he could well be on his way to Augusta National

European Tour: Qatar Masters – Jeunghun Wang

If you’re wondering how impressive Jeunghun Wang is then only Alex Noren has won more in the past 12 months and only Henrik Stenson has the same number of victories (3). What’s more only Matteo Manassero and Seve have been younger than the 21-year-old to get their hat-trick up.

Wang, who won back-to-back in Morocco and Mauritius, birdied the first extra hole after Jaco Van Zyl three-putted for par while Joakim Lagergren could also only make a five.

This was just the Korean’s 29th start and he began the day three clear. He birdied the first two holes but Van Zyl picked up shots at four of the first five holes.

Then France’s Mike Lorenzo-Vera eagled 16 to go eight under for Sunday and join Wang in the lead but he then three-putted 17 and ended up wet at the last to miss out on the play-off.

Wang birdied 16, bogeyed 17 and came up two inches short of victory but he secured the victory when getting up and down from behind the closing green.

He is now inside the top 50 in the world and in line for a start in the Masters.

What Wang said: “When I was young, I really wanted to play the Masters. I always imagined that I would play there. Maybe now I have a chance to play. I’m so happy about it and I hope I’m going to get in. That’s my dream, dream tournament.

“I just don’t want to get any pressure this year. I just want to learn from the other players. I just want to keep winning, I hope. I was really nervous on the back nine. I missed a lot of greens but my chipping was really good so I saved everything and finally I won.”

PGA Tour: Farmers Insurance Open – Jon Rahm

Jon Rahm etched his name into the history books at Torrey Pines after becoming the youngest ever winner at the event.

The Spaniard, who notched his first PGA Tour victory, eagled two of his last six holes including a 60-foot monster on the 18th to spark wild celebrations as he awaited his fate.

This time last year Rahm was still an amateur and this was just his 12th start. He began the day three back and, while nine players held the lead at some point on Sunday, he was never really a consideration until his stellar back nine of 30.

His 3-3 finish, after a precise tee shot and THAT putt, left Charles Howell and CT Pan three back in second. Justin Rose eventually tied for fourth after a closing 70.

Brandt Snedeker could have joined Tiger and Phil Mickelson as the only three-time champions at Torrey Pines but he stumbled to a 73.

What Rahm said: “I was doing everything that I needed, but the putts were not falling. Today was completely different. After that second shot on No. 13, I was able to execute so good and think clearly all the time. The putt was a little bit of lagging it up there and just hoping it kept the line.

“I can’t explain what went through my mind. I saw the replay, and I don’t even remember what I did. I’m so blessed to have a chance to win. It does a lot for me. I get to the play the Players Championship, I am likely going to the Fed Ex Cup, I am going to the Majors, it is amazing.”

Mark Townsend

Been watching and playing golf since the early 80s and generally still stuck in this period. Huge fan of all things Robert Rock, less so white belts. Handicap of 8, fragile mind and short game
