Equipment: TaylorMade 2017 M2 Irons big hitter testing

We’ve already reviewed the TaylorMade 2017 M2 irons on a first hit basis but wanted to get some numbers from our anonymous big hitter.

Now before you get all serious, this was purely for fun.

The TaylorMade 2017 M2 irons are not aimed at elite players.

Their target audience is 15-30 handicappers who need maximum forgiveness and a bit of extra distance.

But we thought it would be good fun to see how far our anonymous big hitter could bash them.

Err… Give the M2 irons to our anonymous big hitter and see how far he can hit them?

Well, we gave him 9,7,5 irons and monitored the numbers using Trackman under the watchful eye of our resident pro James Whitaker.

On the day conditions were freezing cold and foggy which weren’t ideal for maximum carry.

Our resident pro James Whitaker actually hit the opening shot with a 9-iron.

He struck it beautifully. It carried 117 yards. He was delighted.

Our anonymous big hitters opening 9-iron shot carried 137 yards. James felt inadequate.

The numbers remained around the 140 yard carry with the 9-iron. The launch was really nice and high which is exactly what TaylorMade say the M2 iron is supposed to do.

According Trackman the ball was stopping dead or spinning back as the overall distance was less than the carry.

With the 7-iron the carry numbers were 175-180 yards, again with very impressive height and spin.

The 5-iron was carrying 210 yards – a good 10 yards further than our anonymous big hitters normal 5-iron carry.

Again, in freezing cold foggy conditions, these numbers were impressive.

TaylorMade 2017 M2 irons big hitter testing – NCG Verdict

It must be said that the lofts on the M2 irons are as strong as they get. The 7-iron loft is 28.5˚ and that’s the loft of many 6-irons.

But the flight was really nice and high so I don’t think you’d be bounding through the green.

These irons do what they say on the tin. They are distance irons and offer stability and forgiveness.

And although not being aimed at the elite and better players, there’s definitely a case for a lower handicapper to stick a 5 or 4 iron in the bag.

Who wouldn’t want long irons that are easier to hit and go a bit further?
