The best hotels for golf in the UK and Ireland

From gorgeous greens to the best links golf courses around, the Good Hotel Guide has just launched their 2017 Guide, and amongst them are the ten of the best hotels for golf.

Chewton Glen, New Milton

A country house spa hotel owned by Relais & Chateaux, Chewton Glen does everything to a luxurious level.  For a particularly unique experience we recommend staying in one of their treehouse suites, where you can wake up with a view of the treetops and the deer roaming below.  The hotel has its own nine hole par three golf course amongst other activities available, for a complete leisure experience in beautiful grounds.

Gilpin Hotel and Lake House, Windermere

best hotels for golf in the UK

A favourite amongst the Guide’s small hotels, Gilpin Hotel and Lake House is a family run country house hotel with spectacular grounds that include Victorian flower gardens, ancient trees and a llama paddock, of all things.  Unique in its design, the hotel has a spa to relax in after a day on the course, and when it comes to golf, it is situated almost opposite Windermere Golf Course, where there is an 18-hole course in the heart of the English Lake District.

Trefeddian Hotel, Wales

Overlooking Cardigan Bay, Trefeddian Hotel has been run by the same family for more than a century and is spectacularly welcoming as well as immaculately kept.  Light, bright and a total escape, the hotel is within easy reach of several golf courses including Aberdovey Golf Club, Machynlleth Golf Club, Borth & Ynyslas Golf Club, Aberystwyth Golf Club and Royal St David’s Golf Club, so you’re really spoiled for choice.

Park House, Sussex

A beautifully run country house hotel beneath the South Downs, Park House has a relaxed atmosphere and a delightfully traditional menu alongside all the necessary mod cons.  The grounds include lawn tennis courts and an open air pool that’s open from April to September, and they also have their own six-hole golf course to play before heading to the spa.

Budock Vean, Cornwall

An 18th century manor house that’s retained a number of its original features (including the requirement to dress for dinner), Budock Vean is set in an idyllic location in Cornwall and offers extremely slick service.  The hotel also has its own nine-hole course within its grounds, set in mature parkland, originally designed by five time Open Winner, James Braid.

Isle of Eriska Hotel, Spa and Island, Scotland

best hotels for golf in the UK

Go across a bridge at the mouth of Loch Creran and you reach Isle of Eriska Hotel, a perfect baronial mansion, which also happens to be a luxury spa hotel complete with its own Michelin-starred restaurant.  Log fires ward off any chilliness, while outdoor diversions include croquet, golf, archery, kayaking and walks until you meet the sea.  Quite literally its own little island, the hotel has its own six-hole par 22 course complete with driving range and practice facility.  For those wanting to extend the experience, courses nearby include Oban Golf Club, Taynuilt Golf Club, Dalmally Golf Club and Dragon’s Tooth.

Ballathie House Hotel, Scotland

The ultimate country house hotel on the banks of the Rive Tay in Perthshire, Ballathie House Hotel has been a country house retreat for generations.  The four star luxury hotel has a two AA rosette award-winning fine dining restaurant and provides a wonderful base from which to explore the area.  When it comes to golf, the hotel has arranged preferential green fees for guests with Auchterarder, Crieff, Pitlochry, Blairgowrie and Murrayshall golf courses amongst others.

Riverwood, Scotland

best hotels for golf in the UK

Surrounded by pheasants, red squirrels and partridges in a leafy conservation village in Scotland, Riverwood is the sort of hotel where slippers are provided and you’re encouraged to make yourself comfortable.  In addition to the warm welcome, guests can enjoy the hotel’s brown trout fishing rights over a 125-metre stretch of the River Tay, as well as complimentary access to the Strathtay Golf Club just minutes away.

The Atlantic Hotel, Channel Islands

Owned and run by the Burke family, The Atlantic Hotel sits on a headland above St Ouen’s Bay.  The staff are the hotel’s greatest asset, and the views are spectacular.  Facilities include a swimming pool, a library and six acres of grounds to run around in, and rooms overlook the neighbouring golf course.   The 18-hole La Moye Golf Club is one of several courses in Jersey, and is reputed to be one of the world’s most beautiful links courses.

Rathsallagh House, Ireland

best hotels for golf in the UK

A chance to be spoiled by the O’Flynn’s at their large country house on the Wicklow/Kildare border, Rathsallagh House was converted from Queen Anne stables in 1798.  Today it stands in sweeping parkland where you can play tennis, croquet or giant Jenga, ride bikes and of course, play golf.  The hotel is surrounded by the Rathsallagh Golf Club, a Championship Course measuring close to 7,000 yards, with a par of 72 all surrounded by mature trees.
