The Niggle: Masters Champions Dinner – What would you serve?

We want to hear your menu suggestions for the annual Augusta feast

With The Masters just over a week away it’s nearly time for the annual festivities and traditions to begin.

Next Tuesday evening Bubba Watson will treat Augusta to his Champions Dinner – a tradition started by Ben Hogan in 1952 where the former champions dine together with the reigning champion selecting the menu

There have been some interesting menu choices over the years.

Back in 1998 a 22-year-old Tiger Woods requested cheeseburgers, chicken sandwiches, french fries and milkshakes.

Sandy Lyle famously added Haggis to the menu in 1989 while Nick Faldo kept it simple with fish and chips in 1997.

So we got thinking at National Club Golfer towers about what we would serve if we had the honour of selecting the menu for the champions dinner.

James Savage (JS) – It would have to be some sort of amazing barbecue with steak, ribs, burgers, sausages, chicken all the extras – salad, potatoes, corn on the cob etc… Nothing fancy just a quality barbecue and a few beers.

Damien Wilde (DW) – I’d have to go for BBQ Pulled pork. Some cheap sausages would go down a treat as well I’m sure.
I think some Coronas would go down well but for those not drinking, it’d be Cherry Coke And there definitely would have to be a Yorkshire pudding in there somehow as you have to stay true to your roots.

Red velvet cake for dessert.

Alessa Hardwick (AH) – I’d kick things off with some jellied eels then a nice roast goose for main with gravy and a side of Hovis Best of Both. For dessert it’d be Cacti ice cream. Not sure I’d be asked to do it again.

Karl Hansell (KH) – I’d leave some chicken on the kitchen side for a few days, let it go iffy, then serve it up in a curry to everyone – making my excuses for why I don’t fancy any myself .

One severe outbreak of salmonella later, and I might have just significantly increased my odds of winning another Green Jacket… 😉
