Defending Champions: Europe
The 18-10 scoreline from two years ago still looks a little odd.
Previously Europe had never got within three points of their opponents on American soil. Half their team in Colorado were rookies and one of them was 17. Yet we wiped the floor with them.
A whitewash in the Saturday fourballs, just the third time it had happened in the competition (the other two were also European), left Lotta Neumann’s team with a five-point lead.
Mentally Europe had the measure of their opponents. We only lost two of the 12 singles, everybody on the team contributed something and the competition’s overall standing had been pegged back to 8-5.
Now we turn to Germany and Golf Club St. Leon-Rot, south of Heidelberg. Carin Koch and Juli Inkster are at the helm for the first time.
America have only won away twice in six attempts but they will never be more buoyed to turn around what happened in their own backyard in 2013.
