Rory McIlroy to miss The Open at St Andrews
Rory McIlroy has confirmed he will not play in the 2015 Open Championship at St Andrews after injuring his ankle playing football.
The Niggle: Will Rory’s absence ruin The Open?
The world number one shocked the golfing world when he posted a picture of himself on crutches earlier this week stating he had ruptured ligaments in his ankle.
He had already pulled out of this week’s Scottish Open but a decision on whether or not he would defend his Open title at St Andrews was not expected to be made until the end of this week.
But to end the speculation, McIlroy once again took to Intstagram to break the news that he was not going to be fit enough to play.
He posted a picture of himself watching the tennis on television with his ankle heavily strapped up.
He wrote: “After much consideration, I have decided not to play in the Open Championship at St Andrews.
“I am taking a long-term view to this injury and although rehab is progressing well, I want to tournament play when I feel 100% healthy and 100% competitive.
“Thank you for all you r support and best wishes. I hope to be back on the course as soon as I can… In the mean time, come on Andy!!!”
