US Open 2015: Four-way shoot out for Chambers Bay glory

Day, Johnson, Grace or Spieth - who's your money on?

Jason Day, Dustin Johnson, Branden Grace and Jordan Spieth all share the US Open lead on -4 heading into the final round at Chambers Bay.

The four nearest challengers – Louis Oosthuizen, Shane Lowry, Cameron Smith and J.B. Holmes – are all three shots back on -1.

It would be hard to see anyone other than those eight players taking the trophy on Sunday as the USGA are unlikely to offer the players much assistance with the course set-up in round four.

World number one Rory McIlroy played beautifully from tee to green in round three but couldn’t hole a putt on greens he claims are more like cauliflower rather than broccoli as Henrik Stenson suggested.

McIlroy is +4 going into Sunday.

Jason Day has been struggling with vertigo and nearly collapsed on Friday but fired five birdies on his back nine in round three as he aims to land his maiden major title.

He claims it was tough to even finish his third round.

“I didn’t feel that great coming out early, and then I felt pretty groggy on the front nine just from the drugs that I had in my system,” Day explained.

“Then I kind of flushed that out on the back nine. But then it kind of came back, the vertigo came back a little bit on the 13th tee box, and then I felt nauseous all day. I started shaking on the 16th tee box and then just tried to get it in, really. I just wanted to get it in.

“Last year I didn’t play the round after I had vertigo and this one was worse. I think the goal was just to go through today and see how it goes.”

As the only Major winner of the four, Masters champion Speith is the favourite to make it two in a row.

“Once I get out on the golf course I’ll just be focused on the round and how to separate myself from the pack.

“I tried to force it a couple of times, that’s just what this course does. If you don’t position it well off the tee, you’ve really got to work hard for a par.

“I’m going to need to drive the ball a little better to win.”

Dustin Johnson has been going about his business quietly but has put himself in a great position to land an overdue Major title.

The American famously blew the US Open lead at Pebble Beach in 2010 but claims he can draw on that experience.

“I’ve been in the situation a few times so I know how to handle myself,” Johnson said.

“I know what it takes to get it done. And tomorrow just need to go out there and focus one shot at a time. And we’ll see what happens.

“I’m very excited. I’m right where I want to be. I’m in position. If I play well tomorrow we’ll see what happens.”

South Africa’s Branden Grace has been the surprise package so far this year but with six European Tour wins, the 27-year old is more than capable of causing an upset.

“I’m stoked. I can’t wait. Tomorrow is going to be a good one. Like I said, this is what we play golf for. So it’s my dream to lead a tournament or tying the lead.

“To go into a tournament like the U.S. Open, having a chance to win my first major is something special.

“Tomorrow is just going to be another tough grind. The course really firmed up towards the end and played really bouncy and tricky.

“They tried to catch us with a couple of holes like 15, 16, and 17. Pushing the tee boxes up so far really toughened it up. It was a tough grind. I’m just happy I’m still in a good position.”
