James Morrison wins Open De Espana

The Englishman gains a second win on the European Tour

James Morrison “stuck to his process” to record a first win in 5 years at the Open De Espana after a bogey free final round 69.

This win is the 30-year-old Morrison’s second career win on the European Tour. His first came at the Madeira Islands Open in 2010.

“It feels amazing. It’s been five years and a lot of chances in between then and now,” said Morrison.

“I just drew on all my experience and just got over the line.”

“The gameplan was just stick to my process, I know that’s a bit of a cliché but it’s true.

David Howell gives us his Best & Worst of the European Tour

“All my coaches have been really big on keeping my process and sticking to it and just dealing with what comes in front me and just going from there.

“In years past when I haven’t quite done it [win], I’ve spent too much time looking at leaderboard and outside influences.

“Today even that last putt, I wanted to hole it badly.

“I just stuck to my process all day long and executed it. It feels amazing.

“Every year we come and play here and it’s always one of the best weeks of the year.

“It’s always on a great golf course, great crowds. I lost it once on a playoff and now I’ve won it, it will be dear to my heart now forever.”

Defending champion Miguel Angel Jimenez finished three shots behind the eventual winner alongside the Frenchman Edouard Espana, England’s David Howell and Italian Francesco Molinari at sx-under.
“It’s such a big week, I’m going to try and ride the crest of a wave and get back to it Monday,” said Morrison who will be looking to take this momentum into next week’s PGA Championship at Wentworth.

“I look forward to having a home week next week, as I live 20 minutes away.”

With this victory Morrison now moves him from 296th in the Official World Golf Ranking to just outside the top 160 and completing a return to form after having to regain his card at Qualifying School in 2013.
