Nearly 50% of golfers will vote Conservative in election

The Tories take over 45 per cent in our poll of where golfers are planing to vote this week

Nearly 50 per cent of golfers are planning to vote for The Conservative Party in this week’s General Election, a survey of National Club Golfer readers has revealed.

After asking golfers through an online survey, just over 45 per cent of respondents said they will be voting for current Prime Minister David Cameron’s party when the polling stations open on Thursday.

The results may not come as a surprise to many with a large percentage of golfers being ’middle-class’ white males aged between 45 and 60.

In the completely confidential survey*, National Club Golfer did not gather demographic information about the respondents after publicising the survey through their website and social media channels.

The Labour Party was the second most popular choice with 16.8 per cent of the vote with the UK Independence Party coming third with 13.93 per cent.

The Liberal Democrats, who form the current Coalition Government the Conservative Party and are led by Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg, received just 4.78 per cent.

The Scottish National Party took 11.20 per cent of the vote with 2.87 per cent stating they will vote for The Green Party and 0.68 per cent electing Plaid Cymru.

The ’Other’ option was selected by 3.96 per cent of the golfers who responded to the survey.

The votes and seats gained by the smaller parties will be crucial when it comes to the formation of the next Government" James Savage, National Club Golfer’s Online Editor, said: “I don’t think there will be too many people surprised that The Conservative Party took the majority of the vote in our survey.

“However, it was quite surprising to see the relatively small numbers for the main opposition parties.

“We’ve just had a Coalition Government for the first time since 1945 and with another hung parliament on the cards, the votes and seats gained by the smaller parties will be crucial when it comes to the formation of the next Government.”

A recent survey by England Golf revealed that adult males accounted for 77 per cent of golf club memberships with adult females accounting for 15 per cent.

Each golf club surveyed had an average of 499 members. The results revealed clubs had on average 148 members aged over 65, 109 aged 55-64, 85 aged 45-54 and 19 aged 35-54.

In the latest opinion polls by YouGov and Populus the Conservatives and Labour are neck and neck with around 33 per cent of the vote each.
