Irons test results: TaylorMade RSi 2 review

Irons test results: TaylorMade RSi 2 review

We review the TaylorMade RSi 2 irons as part of the 2015 irons test

First impressions: The RSi 2 irons also feature the revolutionary face slot technology to provide extra forgiveness on off-centre hits. The face slots are found in the 3-8 irons.

Much sleeker, than the RSi 1 irons, these will appeal to the low-mid handicappers. There is also a TP version of the RSi irons which have been very popular among TaylorMade‘s Tour staffers.

The finish and design give these irons a real premium feel. They look fantastic on the shelf and in the bag.

What they sayThe most resounding characteristic of the RSi 2 is the Progressive Multi-Material Construction. The 3-5 irons are cast from 450 stainless steel with tungsten weighting to promote a lower CG and slightly higher flight.

PGA Tour Professionals find the centre of the clubface far more often than amateurs, but even the world’s best players miss more often than you think.

Sergio Garcia is regarded as one of the most consistent players on the PGA Tour when he has an iron in his hand, but the mis-hit is also a big factor for him.

“It’s difficult to hit the centre of the clubface every time. That’s why it’s important that the club you play helps those little mis-hits perform pretty much as well as your sweetspot hits.”

NCG Verdict: The idea behind these irons is to add maximum forgiveness while retaining the head shape and proportion of an iron designed for the experienced player.

I think TaylorMade have succeeded on both scores and, for me, this is the most rounded iron they have designed in years.

I want my irons to be as forgiving as possible but I don’t want them to be ‘jumpy’ off the face and the RSi2s fit the bill nicely.

HOT: Lovely compact head shapes but packing plenty of forgiveness
NOT: Strong in all areas without necessarily excelling in any one department
