Jordan Spieth contends yet again at RBC Heritage
Masters champion Jordan Spieth remains in contention at the RBC Heritage despite being five shots behind current leader Troy Merritt.
After struggling through his opening round, 21-year old Spieth recovered in his following rounds and now sits in tied-eighth at nine-under.
“I think it could have been better,” said Spieth. “I think yesterday‑‑ it’s hard to compare the round today from yesterday, when it was a career‑type round.
“When I do hit a good tee shot, I’m getting the ball around, and my short game is on right now.
“So it’s just going to be about hitting greens, getting myself into spots and adjust to the speed early on.
The World Number Two admitted he now feels comfortable : “The first one was a weird feeling round. Yesterday felt better.”
“Today I felt even more comfortable, like it was a normal Saturday.
“Each round has been a little bit easier.
“The weird thing is this is the first time I’ve been in contention where I haven’t felt nerves one time, after last week.”
Spieth will rely on his aggressive game in a bid to win this weekend: “I’ve got nothing to lose.
“If it doesn’t work out and I shoot even or whatever, then it was still a great stretch. And if I get out there and hit the shots that I want to hit, then I’ve got a possibility of contending again.
Today I felt even more comfortable, like it was a normal Saturday. Northern Ireland’s Graeme McDowell and England’s Luke Donald are also in contention ahead of the final day.
Both men currently sit in a group tied-10th at eight-under par after three rounds.
Speaking on the playing conditions, Donald said: “This place stays a lot more difficult when it’s firm. But today with not much breeze and soft conditions, if you’re playing well, you can make some birdies.
And after a few disappointing performances in recent weeks, the 37-year old added: “I’ve been hitting the ball reasonably well most of the year, especially the last few months.
“I haven’t been putting as well as I would have liked. That’s usually a strength of my game, but it’s kind of letting me down a little bit.
“It let me down in the first round, too. But I seem to be putting better the last two days and hopefully more of that to continue.”
