East Midlands Round-up: Country officials take up roles

Leicester union officials, Kedleston Park matchplay, Elsham pro honoured by PGA

Leicester County Union has appointed new officials to the top county’s top roles.

Former president Keith Tripp has been succeeded by Graham Webb of Kirby Muxloe, while Oliver Wilson, of Longcliffe, has taken over as county captain from Jim Longstaff, from Park Hill.

At the union’s annual general meeting, Tripp said he had enjoyed his term as president and thanked everyone for their success.

He made two presentations – one to Richard Wale of the Leicestershire, who topped the Midland Union 2014 Order of Merit, and the other to Coby Cartwright, of Cosby, after the 16-year-old’s highly-successful season.

Kedleston Park matchplay event

Kedleston Park in Derbyshire has announced details of its third annual pairs matchplay tournament.

After two successful stagings, this year’s tournament begins in May 2015 and the club is inviting entries from golfers with valid club handicaps, before the closing date of April 20.

Formerly the Corporate Matchplay tournament, the club is pleased to announce that this year’s competition, the Kedleston Park Pairs Open Matchplay, will be open to all golfers and not just businesses.

The cost of entry is £60 per pair for Kedleston Park members and £80 for visitors, with the entry fee covering the cost of all green gees right through to the final, with a trip to Royal Lytham and St Anne’s up for grabs for the winners.

Brewer honoured for dedication to golf

Elsham pro Stuart Brewer has been made a Fellow of the Professional Golfers Association.

This year, Brewer is celebrating his 25th anniversary with the club, but over the past three years he has also coached Ladies European Tour players Sophie Walker and Whitney Hillier.

Speaking to the Grimsby Telegraph, Brewer said he believed the girls were getting close to success. He said: “I feel extremely positive about both Sophie and Whitney’s games and feel success is close. It is a really thrill to coach these players who operate at such a high level.”

Additionally, Brewer has coached winners in all of Lincolnshire’s major amateur and professional county championships.
