The captains at Branston got their year underway with a Robin Hood style drive-in.
A sell-out Texas Scramble of 162 golfers saw club captain Tim Winn, lady captain Sarah Shaw and junior captain James Wilkinson announce the Donna Louise Children’s Hospice as charity of the year, while dressed as the legendary outlaw and his merry men.
This May, Winn is also aiming to raise £10,000 for the charity by rowing the Tower to Tower challenge in an open boat, 500 miles from the Tower of London to the Eiffel Tower.
He said: “Branston members and guests turned out in record numbers, not only for the drive-in, but 150 attended the awards presentation and 110 sat down for our tradition dinner. The whole day was a terrific success and typical of the enthusiasm and friendliness for which Branston Club is renowned.”
‘We’re looking forward to a terrific golfing year’ Having benefitted from training and the loan of equipment from Burton Archery Club, individuals target practiced across the 18th green’s water hazard. This whetted the crowd’s appetite for a mass archery shoot up the fairway before the captains delivered the traditional drive-in to rapturous applause, especially when Winn’s frock hampered his style and the first ball exploded in a shower of chalk dust.
Richard Odell, director of golf, said: “We’re looking forward to a terrific golfing year with Tim, Sarah and James at the helm, particularly now that Gavin Robson’s talents and significant capital investments on the course and at the academy, together with a top-flight team of professionals, are establishing Branston as one of the finest clubs in the Midlands.”
