East Midlands: Pensioner killed by van during club visit
A 78-year-old man was struck and killed by a van as he crossed a the road during a game at Thetford in Norfolk.
The incident took place on Thursday February 26 and the man was part of a 70-strong golf society group from Chigwell in Essex.
The man was a long-term member of Chigwell and although staff at the club and the emergency services attempted to revive him, the pensioner died at the scene.
Malcolm Grubb, manager of Thetford, said the victim had been using a trolley to carry his clubs from the fifth to the sixth holes, crossing the B1107.
“It’s a tragedy,” he said. “Especially as they came here to have a nice day playing golf. We are desperately sad that the day has ended this way.
‘We are desperately sad the day has ended this way’ “Everything was done to try and resuscitate the man, including our own staff using a defibrillator we have recently bought.
“Of course the club offers our sympathies to the man’s family and Chigwell Golf Society.”
The driver of the van stopped at the scene and although police were called to the collision at 7.40am, no arrests were made.
